Controller

Upbound is looking for a controller to own the accounting function as we scale. The role will be a highly visible and report directly to the Head of Finance, and will work closely with the entire executive team. You will play a critical role overseeing all day-to-day accounting operations, assisting in the creation of board and executive team financial packages and in the budgeting process. Initially this position will manage our external accounting firm but offers the opportunity to build the accounting function from the ground up as we scale, helping Upbound scale by building efficient processes, stage-appropriate financial controls, systems and data to make better decisions.

This role requires a proven self-starter who can work in the fast-paced environment where requirements can change quickly. Working and communicating effectively across functions will be critical to drive results and hit deadlines.

In this role you will…

• Oversee all day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, revenue, treasury, tax, compliance, accounts payable and accounts receivable.
• Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, and ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with GAAP standards.
• Lead our payroll, commissions process and expense management, including systems, policy and operations.
• Manage cash flow by forecasting cash needs and optimize cash management strategies, balancing returns, liquidity and risks.
• Establish and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets, ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, and mitigate financial risks.
• Oversee all aspects of tax planning, compliance, and reporting. Coordinate with external tax advisors to optimize tax strategies, minimize liabilities, and ensure adherence to applicable tax laws and regulations.
• Assist in the preparation of Board and executive financial packages.
• Evaluate existing financial systems, processes, and procedures to identify opportunities for automation, efficiency improvements, and scalability. Implement best practices to streamline workflows and enhance productivity.

You are a good fit if you have…

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA certification required.
• Proven experience (5+ years) in an accounting leadership role, preferably within the software or technology industry.
• Thorough understanding of GAAP principles, financial reporting standards, and regulatory requirements.
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex financial data and derive actionable insights.
• Operational focus and drive to improve efficiency across the organization.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
• Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy, integrity, and confidentiality.
• Proficiency in financial software applications and ERP systems (Netsuite, Quickbooks, SAP, etc.).
