Role Overview

We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to lead the development of our Ruby on Rails–based web platform. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who thrives in fast-moving environments and has experience building scalable web applications with complex business logic and evolving feature sets.
You’ll start by managing a team of 4 engineers and play a key role in shaping the team, product, and technical direction as we build out a mission-critical platform for our business. We’re looking for a player/coach—someone who enjoys mentoring and growing engineers, but who can also write production-ready code and lead by example.
If you’ve read Extreme Ownership, you’re the boat team captain for this team of engineers. You will be accountable for the results of the team and have control over hiring and firing for your team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and support a high-performing team of engineers building a modern web application on Ruby on Rails and Next.js.
  • Ensure the delivery of well crafted technical output with buck-stops-here accountability.
  • Balance people management with team leadership, technical guidance, and hands-on engineering work.
  • Help define the product roadmap in partnership with product and design leaders.
  • Break down large ideas into actionable projects, manage scope, and ensure timely, high-quality delivery.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Design, and Technical Program Management to identify blockers, mitigate risk, and keep projects moving forward.
  • Set and uphold standards for code quality, testing, security, and performance, particularly around Ruby and PostgreSQL.
  • Scale the output of the team both through recruiting and developing the capabilities of existing team members.

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of engineering management experience, ideally in user-facing web applications with complex workflows, and long-term technical evolution.
  • Deep knowledge of Ruby and Rails, including real-world architectural decisions and tradeoffs.
  • Deep knowledge of Javascript and Next.js, including real-world architectural decisions and tradeoffs.
  • Deep knowledge of PostgreSQL, including schema design, query optimization, and data integrity.
  • Proven ability to lead teams in startup or growth-stage environments.
  • Strong project management instincts: scope control, delivery tradeoffs, risk awareness.
  • Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, both with engineers and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Comfortable working in code, reviewing PRs, and guiding technical decisions when needed.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and benefits package
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Unlimited PTO and paid holidays
  • Monthly Uber Eats Credit
  • Industrious or similar co-working membership
  • Semi annual team retreats and ad hoc meetups
  • A collaborative and supportive work environment

We are dataplor, and we're driven by the mission to illuminate global market opportunities. We recognized early on that the global location data landscape was fraught with challenges – data was not only difficult to access but also plagued by inaccuracies. This reality created significant blind spots for businesses, often forcing them to take speculative risks when expanding into new territories. Our core objective is to bridge these critical information gaps. We provide businesses with reliable, comprehensive location intelligence for virtually every public and commercial location worldwide, covering over 250 countries and territories. We aim to make the world feel a little less vast by bringing previously overlooked markets into sharp focus, enabling companies to identify untapped potential and foster stronger connections within the global business community.

Our approach is built on a unique synergy of advanced technology and human expertise. We leverage cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence, machine learning, and large language models to gather, process, and analyze vast amounts of geospatial data. This includes everything from geographically tagged information and online feedback to consumer behaviors for every location, brand, or region. However, we understand that technology alone isn't enough to guarantee the accuracy needed for critical business decisions. That's why we also employ a global network of over 100,000 human validators and an in-house international team of data analysts. These experts possess native language proficiency and local expertise, conducting rigorous human reviews, error detection, and deduplication. This meticulous, multi-layered process ensures our datasets are not only comprehensive and dynamically updated in near real-time but also exceptionally accurate. We're passionate about empowering businesses to make data-driven decisions with confidence, whether it's for strengthening investment strategies, reaching new audiences, optimizing site selection, or understanding competitive landscapes. We're committed to privacy-first principles, ensuring no personally identifiable information (PII) is collected or used, adhering to stringent privacy laws like GDPR.
