Major League Hacking (MLH) is rethinking technical education for the modern world. Now that every company is a technology company, we need faster and more effective ways to train the talent that everyone depends on. Our unique hands-on, community-driven approach has helped more than 500,000 technologists worldwide launch their careers and stay up-to-date with the latest trends. If you're passionate about technology, education, and the future of work – this this the place for you!

Role Overview:

The MLH Fellowship is an educational internship alternative, where aspiring technologists have the opportunity to collaborate on real-world software projects under the guidance of expert mentors. We truly believe that this program can change the face of technology education and hiring, helping computer science students learn the skills that they’re not getting in the classroom, but are necessary to join the workforce.

As a Technical Program Associate in the MLH Fellowship, you'll be the day-to-day contact for a group of 5-15 MLH Fellows called a "Pod". You'll help them gain the most skills as they participate in the program, support them technically with their projects, and build a community within your pod.

We provide extensive training to equip our Technical Program Associates with the skills they need to manage projects, mentor fellows and work with our partners. Over 12 weeks, you'll develop the skills needed to become a technical team lead or technical program manager as well as set you on a trajectory to become an Engineering Manager one day. If you're looking to build on your soft and technical skills in parallel, this is the perfect opportunity for you.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Creating community. As the leader of your pod, you'll create a community of people learning together. You'll lead various activities and events to make do this and continually help build trusting relationships amongst Fellows.

  • Technical mentorship - You'll be the first escalation point for your Fellows, working in no more than two codebases, and available for pair programming or code reviews. You'll also be closely involved with finalizing the technical scope of your Fellows' projects and attend any standing meetings with our project maintainers.

  • Run regular pod meetings - MLH Fellows meet several times per week to discuss projects, priorities, and learnings. You'll be responsible for leading these meetings.

  • Ongoing project management & reporting. You’ll work with your Fellows to ensure they’re making progress on their assigned projects and curriculum (if applicable). You’ll report back regularly, ensuring our program staff are in the loop.

  • Building relationships. Much of the MLH Fellowship is about connections with the Fellowship Team - you'll build strong relationships with each of your Fellows to help them grow. You will also build trust with our project maintainers and keep them updated on the progress of their participants.

  • We’re a team of 20 full-time people with offices in New York City and Bangalore/Delhi.

  • We have a group of world-class investors including General Catalyst, Alexis Ohanian (Reddit), Jeff Lawson (Twilio), and Sundance DiGiovanni (Major League Gaming).

Requirements

  • Community Mindset: Building friendships, relationships, and community is what drives you.

  • Organization: You can manage 3-4 partner projects and 5 to 15 MLH Fellows.

  • Communication: You must also be able to communicate extremely well with our partners and to help our MLH Fellows.

  • Coding Ability: You can code proficiently in Python (Web or Data), JavaScript, TypeScript, or Java.

  • Open Source: You have experience contributing to major Open Source projects or production-level code.

  • Hours: You're able to commit 10 or 20 hours per week during our Fellowship Semesters, which usually run for 12 weeks in February - April, June - August, and September - December. Each pod you work with is a 10 hour a week commitment.

  • Passion/Interests: You’re passionate about technical education and communities.

  • Age: You must be 18 or over for this position.

At the heart of Major League Hacking (MLH) is a vibrant culture dedicated to empowering the next generation of technologists. Founded in 2013, MLH has grown from a small group of passionate hackers into a global movement that supports over 500,000 developers worldwide. We believe in the power of 'learning by doing,' a philosophy that permeates every hackathon, workshop, and fellowship program we organize. Our mission is simple yet profound: to provide students with the resources, mentorship, and community they need to turn their crazy ideas into reality.

We are more than just a company; we are a community-first organization. As a Certified B Corporation, we are legally committed to prioritizing the impact of our decisions on our community, not just our shareholders. This commitment is reflected in our core values, which emphasize inclusivity, education, and the democratization of technology. Whether it's through our flagship Hackathon League, which powers over 200 weekend-long invention competitions annually, or the MLH Fellowship, a remote internship alternative that pairs aspiring engineers with open-source projects, we are constantly seeking new ways to serve our hackers.

Our team is a diverse group of former hackers, organizers, and industry veterans who share a deep love for the hacker community. We foster a collaborative and flexible work environment where every team member is encouraged to 'take out the trash'—a metaphor for our willingness to do whatever it takes to support our community and each other. From our headquarters in New York City to our remote team members around the globe, we are united by a shared passion for technology and a drive to make the world a better place, one hack at a time. Join us in our mission to empower hackers and shape the future of technology.
