As a Senior Software Engineer at Zendesk, you'll be an integral leader in our Mobile Services engineering teams, shaping the future of our backend services that support groundbreaking mobile products. Your engineering expertise will help ensure that our mobile SDKs & Web Widget remain top-tier assets utilized by leading apps across various industries.

What you’ll be doing:
Architect reliable, secure, and scalable backend systems.
Spearhead complex projects and guide technical strategy alignment with business objectives.
Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and professional development guidance to engineers at all levels.
Stay abreast of current trends and best practices in the technology underlying our services and related technologies, leading innovation initiatives.
Participate in code reviews and engage in pair programming sessions with peers to maintain high code quality.
Collaborate with team members to troubleshoot and fix defects.
Contribute to technical documentation and specifications.
Lead and manage the entire lifecycle of features, from conception through deployment, performance tuning, and maintenance.
Collaborate with the team on how best to work.
Proactively identify areas of technical debt and inefficiency, propose and advocate for sustainable solutions, and implement strategies to prevent such issues in the future.
Work with engineering leadership and your team to foster a collaborative, cohesive and sustainable engineering environment.
Actively participate in feature discovery, working closely with Product and engaging with upstream and downstream engineering teams.
Lead by example in taking responsibility for all levels of testing, including setting up best practices for unit, integration, system, and acceptance testing, ensuring the highest quality of the codebase.
What you bring to the role
Required experience:
Understanding and familiarity with crafting and working with backend technologies.
Experience with Scala, Ruby on Rails and event driven architectures.
Experience with Ruby on Rails and a deep understanding of its ecosystem.
Experience with designing and implementing service-oriented applications.
Experience in relational database management systems and SQL.
Ambition and high motivation to understand complex systems, focused on identifying and decomposing requirements.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills. You can effectively express your point of view to others and just as importantly, actively listen to others ensuring a good discussion.
Comfortable with picking up new technologies and languages.
Exceptional debugging skills and a systematic approach to root cause analysis, enabling timely resolution of complex issues within the system.
Nice to have:
Experience with TypeScript.
Experience working with Datadog.
Understanding of SLIs, SLOs & error budgets.
Experience with k8s PODs & podded architecture.
Experience with distributed monoliths & microservices architecture patterns.
Tech Stack
Our services in Mobile Services are written in Ruby / Ruby On Rails, Scala & React. Further afield we work with teams with services written in TypeScript and Java.
We rely on multiple data stores such as MySQL, Memcached, Redis, Kafka, DynamoDB.
