Pierce Barney

I've spent the last decade moving between frontend engineering, IT infrastructure, and operations, usually landing in situations where the existing systems didn't work and something had to be built from nothing.

Most recently, I co-founded Crofter Market, a digital marketplace connecting local food producers with consumers. I built the original frontend in SvelteKit, TypeScript, and SCSS, set up deployment on Cloudflare Workers, and was the company's sole employee for about two years before we grew to a small team. When the business needed to pivot from producer-fulfilled orders to in-house distribution, I reworked the core application to support it. I also acted as product manager for most of that time: writing specs, prioritizing the roadmap, and working support tickets myself so I understood what customers actually needed.

Before that, I spent five years at InformationPages.com, a SaaS platform for directory publishers, working across a large legacy PHP and SQL codebase. I built their customizable email system, a unified photo management system, and improved search performance through SQL optimization, going from junior developer to someone who could confidently work any part of the platform.

Earlier in my career I ran IT for a directory publishing company, migrated three offices onto a unified VoIP system, and built a proof-of-concept internal tool that was good enough to get me moved into a dedicated developer role, where I later built internal tools that cut manual workloads by up to 70%. That performance led to a role taking over a struggling department at a related company and rebuilding it with real workflows and a functioning team.

My core stack is TypeScript, JavaScript, SvelteKit, HTML/CSS, PHP, SQL, and GraphQL, with Docker and Cloudflare for infrastructure. I'm currently building out React and Elixir/Phoenix, the latter through direct mentorship from a senior developer during Crofter's final months.

Outside of work, I volunteer as technical consultant for a nonprofit family life center near me and sit on the board of a local community organization. I also play guitar, train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and I'm conversational in Russian from two years spent living in southern Russia.
