Sean Gilbertson
@seangilbertson
I build reliable full-stack products, billing systems, and scalable backend infrastructure.
What I'm looking for
I've led full-stack product and pricing-platform development at SingleFile, including a zero-downtime subscription price migration with deep Stripe synchronization. I build production-safe billing, payment, and customer-facing workflows that reduce operational toil and improve reliability.
Previously, I built APIs, web applications, and infrastructure at Understood.org and BuzzFeed, including Wunder's Python, MongoDB, Tornado, Kubernetes, and Fastly-based API and BuzzFeed's Infinite Quizzes feature, which delivered millions in annual revenue. I use Python, Django, React, TypeScript, cloud infrastructure, and AI-assisted workflows to turn complex business requirements into durable systems.

Led full-stack development of a product catalog platform and architected a company-wide pricing migration with zero downtime. Built billing systems with Stripe integration and pioneered AI-assisted development workflows.
• Led the design and construction of a Python-, MongoDB-, and Tornado-based API for the MVP and eventual full public release of our app, Wunder, featuring robust Fastly-based caching capabilities. This API is a microservice that lives in our mono-repo, and is deployed as a Docker container within Google Cloud Platform (Kubernetes). I also debugged and contributed bug fixes to the React Native-base
Led the design and construction of a Python-, MongoDB-, and Tornado-based API for the Wunder app, featuring robust Fastly-based caching. Expanded backend capabilities by integrating new features into an existing Django-based API, and architected foundational Python-based backend services and React-based frontend code for the main website.
Created an iOS app called Quantum Luck, that uses quantum physics to guarantee random dice rolls for Dungeons & Dragons games. Launched to the public in the summer of 2019.
• Worked full-time with Python, Node.JS, React, and Perl in a full-stack capacity. All projects were microservice Docker containers hosted in AWS, deployed via our custom pipeline, and monitored in Datadog and automatically tested via Jenkins. Back-ends were built using either Python (typically with Tornado), Node.JS, or Go. Front-ends were built using React, with some early projects using Javascr
Created the Tinderbox service (http://tinderbox.ninja) for extracting web content (e.g. news articles, blog posts, and Reddit threads — including images) and delivering it to users’ Kindle devices. The service features a best-in-class algorithm for extracting web content from any source without any assumptions regarding format or structure. Launched Tinderbox to the public in the fall of 2018.
• Assisted in launching a major redesign and enhancement of the core consumer offering.
• Enhanced and maintained critical Rails- and Backbone.JS-based consumer-facing and back-end administration tools.
• Maintained and enhanced backend services and website for the Cartwheel application using Java and Spring Framework.
• Created internal and external API endpoints for access to discount catalog and user- tailored discount recommendations.
• Designed and implemented a web application using Rails & jQuery that transformed the management of complex HVAC systems, incorporating a proprietary algorithm that automated power settings to optimize costs and user comfort.
• Spearheaded the development of a sophisticated Rails application to streamline the execution of large-scale pay & management surveys for hospitals, achieving this within a

• Led the development of two major versions of Source, a public-facing Ajax-driven web application, managing news sources' relationship with the Public Insight Network (PIN).
• Developed two major versions of a Gmail-like web application for searching, viewing, and annotating inquiry responses from the PIN's sources.
• Led the engineering effort for two major versions of software, utilizing Zend Framework and MySQL, that transformed users' personal websites into hard-cover "CaringBooks" and PDF files.
• Maintained and improved prior Java Struts and Perl versions of the site, demonstrating adaptability across multiple programming languages and frameworks.
• Maintained and improved existing architectural project management software, demonstrating skills in software maintenance and improvement.
• Created two major versions of a dynamic ASP.NET 2.0 web application that interfaced with the main Exchange software to provide aggregate viewing, and editing, of staff calendar information.
• Co-designed and independently wrote a comprehensive scheduling, time-clocking, and payroll system using PHP and PostgreSQL.
• Saved the company $1M annually by designing a new workstation for collectors. End product allowed collectors to interact with centralized software on thin clients, minimizing licensing needs.

• Designed and created an end-user network security Windows program which provided an intuitive means for users to have real-time control over which processes had access to certain resources (e.g., specific files, network communication). This application was later sold for further development.
• Helped design and implement an application that provided software testers with tools to simulate enviro
