Key Responsibilities
- Develop project staffing and budget plans.
- Identify and cultivate partnerships with climate communications groups that share the project’s vision.
- Plan editorial calendar, make assignments for stories and data visualizations, and manage production of features, blogs, graphics, and data visualizations about Earth and climate science for the public.
- Write and edit magazine-style features and other content for public audiences.
- Cultivate a network of subject matter experts to review content, answer questions from staff and the public, and make recommendations for stories, blogs, and data visualizations.
- Establish editorial policy and workflows to ensure scientific integrity of published content.
- Mentor and develop junior writers.
- Lead the production of proposals, technical publications, reports, brochures, speeches, and audiovisual materials for a variety of audiences.
- Review and approve graphics and data visualizations for stories, blogs, and other web or print content.
- Develop messaging and rollout plans for social media campaigns, and direct development of images, videos, and animations.
- Represent the project in networking and fundraising activities, including speaking to the media.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Master’s degree in communications, journalism, or related field, plus 20 years of experience in Earth science and climate communication for federal science agencies.
- Minimum 10 years experience managing a content production team.
- Deep portfolio of published climate science stories.
- Extensive knowledge of climate science.
- Extensive knowledge of best practices in data visualization and information design.
- Must have an existing network of scientific experts that can be consulted for stories.
- Ability to do basic image editing and graphic production using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
- Ability to make basic maps of climate and Earth science data using open source applications (Gprojector, Panoply).
- Ability to make and style graphs.
- Experience writing requirements documents for web development and content management systems.
- Ability to do basic html coding.
- Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced environment with daily production deadlines.
- History working as managing editor/program manager for NOAA Climate.gov website.
