Major League Hacking (MLH) is seeking a Program Manager to join our growing team and lead our new Hack Days initiatives.
Hack Days are twelve-hour or less mini hackathons that can take place anywhere in the world. While many of these events take place on college/university campuses, they also take place at local libraries, coffee shops, and corporate offices. Unlike MLH’s weekend-long hackathons, we do not send staff to these Hack Days. We do ship a box of supplies to each organizer, though.
As our Hack Days Program Manager, you’ll take the early success we’ve seen with this program and build it into a robust system that powers over 500+ mini hackathons a year. While we have some frameworks in place, we’re still in the early stages of development. You’ll help double our annual number of events, manage contractors who support organizers as they plan events, and ensure each Hack Day event is a success that empowers the next generation of software creators.
You and your team will be responsible for determining which events MLH will work with each year, onboarding them, and then providing ongoing advice & support leading up to their events. You’ll ensure we provide excellent support through email and group calls. You’ll also maintain our resources, like our written public guide.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Develop, Modify, and Follow Processes. Managing 750+ annual events around the world is no small task. You must be able to create and rely on a process to make them all happen. As the program expands, you’ll need to adapt our existing processes and develop new ones to fit the unique demands of these events.
Contractor Management. Day-to-day management and development of our Hack Days contract coordinators. You’ll provide them with instructions and support as they work with our hackathon organizers. You’ll measure their performance and ensure they are successful.
Develop and Manage Organizer Relationships. Hack Days can often be the first direct contact we have with an engaged hacker who is ready to start building their own community. You’ll be responsible for identifying new organizers, inspiring them to plan a Hack Day, and managing our relationship with them.
Support Enablement. You will ensure our organizers receive high-quality help when they reach out. This might mean developing or reworking support processes, producing public/private resources to distribute to organizers. You’ll work with a small number of contractors to help scale your reach, but you will still need to do some support work yourself.
Maintain Organizer Satisfaction. Our organizers need to be excited about working with Major League Hacking, and you will further build that excitement. Our ability to run events hinges on our ability to meet our organizers' needs and ensure they want to work with us. This means both ensuring we meet the commitments we make and the intangibles of creating strong, positive relationships.
Monitoring & Reporting. Track our ability to meet commitments to our organizers and their own fulfillment of their commitments to us.
