Backend Team Lead

Lucidya is in search of a proactive and talented Backend Team Lead to spearhead our backend development efforts. In this pivotal role, you will oversee a skilled team of backend developers, ensuring that our systems are designed for performance, scalability, and maintainability. With a deep understanding of best practices in backend architecture, you will guide your team in delivering high-quality software solutions that leverage our machine learning and big data capabilities.

Your responsibilities will include setting development standards, mentoring team members, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to align backend development with our overall product strategy. You will also be deeply involved in coding, refactoring, and optimizing backend services, as well as reviewing code to maintain robust and efficient systems.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on Backend Team Lead with 8–10 years of backend engineering experience, who acts as a technical authority and end-to-end owner for a product area or set of backend services. You combine strong system design depth with people leadership, and are accountable not only for code quality but also for delivery, reliability, and team growth.

You have a proven ability to balance product feature delivery with platform stability and scalability, work closely with Delivery Managers / PMs on delivery commitments, and coach engineers on design, deployment safety, and operational excellence. A strong ownership mindset, focus on observability, performance, and security, and a passion for continuous learning and mentoring are essential for success in this role.

Key Responsibilities

• Own a product area or set of backend services end-to-end, with clear ownership boundaries and accountability for outcomes
• Lead design and implementation of complex backend systems involving multiple services, ensuring scalability, security, and cost efficiency
• Act as technical authority for backend architecture, defining API contracts, data models, and integration patterns
• Jointly own delivery commitments with Delivery Managers (DMs)/PMs, ensuring predictable execution and high-quality outcomes
• Balance technical roadmap vs. product roadmap, prioritizing stability, scalability, and new feature development appropriately
• Define and govern release and rollout strategies, including feature flags, phased rollouts, and canary deployments
• Ensure backend services meet reliability and performance targets, including:
• SLA compliance
• P95 / P99 latency for key endpoints
• MTTR and time to patch critical vulnerabilities
• Ensure strong observability, on-call readiness, and runbooks for owned services
• Lead, mentor, and manage backend engineers, ensuring delivery discipline, productivity, and a high-performance engineering culture
• Drive continuous learning and technical growth of team members through coaching, design reviews, and knowledge sharing
• Collaborate closely with frontend, QA, platform, and SRE teams to deliver end-to-end solutions

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
• 8–10 years of backend engineering experience, including leading complex projects or acting as a de-facto technical lead
• 3+ years of experience in a leadership or team lead role.
• Proven experience owning backend services or product areas end-to-end in a production SaaS environment
• Strong expertise in backend technologies such as Python and/or Ruby on Rails
• Deep understanding of system design, domain-driven design (DDD), event-driven architectures, and data modeling at scale
• Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases such as PostgreSQL, Cassandra, and Redis
• Hands-on experience designing for scalability, reliability, security, and performance
• Experience defining and managing API contracts and service integration patterns
• Familiarity with release strategies such as feature flags, canary deployments, and phased rollouts
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure)
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex distributed systems
• People leadership experience with responsibility for delivery, mentoring, and team development
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills across engineering, product, and delivery functions
