Senior Virtualization Engineer

We are looking for a Virtualization Engineer to join our Infrastructure team within our Cloud Engineering & Operations division. CE&O ensures the continuous availability of the technologies and systems that are the foundation of athenahealth’s services. We are directly responsible for thousands of servers, petabytes of storage, and handling thousands of web requests per second, all while sustaining growth at a meteoric rate. We enable an operating system for the medical office that removes administrative complexity, leaving doctors free to practice medicine. But enough about us; let’s talk about you,

You are an engineer with a passion for automating infrastructure. Manual processes irk you, so you take the time upfront to develop a solution to automate them in as simplistic fashion as possible. You love working in a large environment so you can solve challenges that become more complex with scale. What’s most important to you is learning new things- and you’re seeking the best environment to enable that growth for yourself.

The Team: We are a bunch of engineers who are passionate about reliability, automation, and scalability in a hybrid cloud environment. We use an agile-based framework to execute our work, ensuring we are always focused on the most important and impactful needs of the business. We support systems in both the private and public cloud and make data-driven decisions based on which one best suit the needs of the business. We are relentless in automating manual, repetitive work so we can focus on projects that help move the business forward.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical guidance to application teams helping ensure their products and services are highly available, performant, secure and scalable.
• Manage and support a large estate of vSphere infrastructure spanning multiple data centers and hosting a variety of workloads.
• Employ creativity & critical thinking to design elegant solutions to complex problems.
• Identify and reduce manual work through automation by applying a code first mentality.
• Participate and contribute to scrum meetings i.e. stand-ups, sprint planning
• Participate in a 24 x 7 on-call schedule responding to critical events and situations outside normal work hours.

Typical Qualifications

• 5+ years of technical experience with VMware Virtualization with preferable expertise in vCenter, ESXi, vSAN, and vRealize.
• Proficiency in at least one modern programming or scripting language such as Powershell, Python, Ruby, or others. 
• Experience managing production infrastructure in a major cloud provider (AWS, Azure, GCP)
• Familiarity with CI\CD software and tools such as Git, Jenkins, Artifactory, Azure DevOps.
• Experience managing large fleets of servers with configuration management tools like Puppet, Chef, or Ansible .Familiarity with behavior driven development test frameworks such as Pester or Selenium.
