Better portfolio decisions create better advisor outcomes.

Manulife Investment Management is seeking a Director, Investment Consulting to join our Montreal-based Investment Consulting team.

This is a senior, advisor-facing consulting role for an experienced investment professional who understands portfolio structure, advisor psychology, and the gap between portfolio management theory and advisor reality.

Working one-on-one with Investment Advisors across Quebec and Atlantic Canada, you will help advisors strengthen portfolio discipline, improve risk management, and better communicate their investment approach with greater confidence.

Internally, you will partner closely with Manulife Investments wholesalers, investment specialists, and distribution colleagues to uncover advisor opportunities, generate referrals into the program, and extend the reach of one of Manulife’s most differentiated support offerings.

This is not a traditional product wholesaling role, and it is not a purely analytical desk role. It is a consultative mandate that sits at the intersection of portfolio analysis, behavioural coaching, and business development

The Role

Most portfolio review programs hand advisors a finished report. This one builds the analysis with them and that distinction is the whole point.

You will act as a senior consulting resource to advisors who want to better understand how their portfolios are built, where the structural weaknesses are, and what practical improvements can be made without sacrificing implementation reality.

The role has three pillars: generating referrals from wholesaler colleagues and building a healthy pipeline of consulting opportunities; facilitating one-on-one consulting engagements tailored to each advisor; and maintaining the administrative discipline that keeps every engagement running at a consistently high standard.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Lead one-on-one investment consulting engagements focused on portfolio construction, asset allocation, downside risk management, implementation efficiency, and advisor communication

  • Analyze advisor portfolios to identify structural weaknesses, including concentration risk, style drift, hidden overlap, recency bias, improper weightings, and insufficient downside protection

  • Translate portfolio findings into clear, practical recommendations tailored to each advisor’s platform, client base, philosophy, and business constraints

  • Equip advisors with portfolio narratives they can use directly with clients and prospects

  • Build and maintain referral relationships with wholesaler colleagues, qualify advisors for the program, and manage an active pipeline of consulting opportunities central to achieving business and activity targets

  • Support occasional branch visits, dealer events & conference, and internal presentations

Required Qualifications:

  • CFA, CIM, or comparable advanced investment designation strongly preferred; CAIA, CIMA, or FRM considered strong assets

  • 5+ years of experience in investment consulting, portfolio analytics, asset management, or a related investment-focused role

  • Deep understanding of modern portfolio theory, asset allocation, risk management, and fixed income across major asset classes

  • Strong working knowledge of mutual funds, ETFs, SMAs, model portfolios, and alternative investments

  • Proven ability to convert portfolio analytics into clear, actionable recommendations

  • Exceptional communication, facilitation, and relationship-building skills

  • High proficiency in Excel; experience with Morningstar, YCharts, Jacobi/Second Engine, or similar tools considered an asset

  • Fully bilingual (French/English): The successful candidate will be required to communicate in English and French in order to support clients from various jurisdictions outside of Quebec.

  • University degree in Finance, Business, Economics, or a related field

When you join our team:

  • We’ll empower you to learn and grow the career you want.

  • We’ll recognize and support you in a flexible environment where well-being and inclusion are more than just words.

  • As part of our global team, we’ll support you in shaping the future you want to see.

The role being advertised is an existing vacancy.
