Position Summary:
IEM is looking for a Part Time- Intern to join the State and Local Preparedness Programs team during the May-August 2024 timeframe to gain experience. The Internship will run for approximately 120 hours, roughly 15 hours a week, over an 8-week period.
Primary Location:
- Candidates can originate from anywhere in the United States
- You will work remote from home.
- All remote work environments require the ability to maintain minimum Internet speeds of 25 Mbps upload and 3 Mbps download, as well as a ping rate of 100 ms or less during working hours, regardless of the type and number of devices using your Internet connection. You must also have account privileges and access to your Internet service provider account during working hours for the purposes of maintaining the Internet connection, if needed.
Essential Functions:
- Primary responsibilities consist of learning about and supporting the research, data collection, note taking, and other documentation tasks as necessary to support a wide range of project efforts and overall product development.
- Learning about and supporting the development of products and materials, such as: emergency operation plans, training and exercise materials, continuity plans, after action reports, resilience plans, pre-disaster recovery plans, hazard mitigation, threat hazard identification and risk assessments, stakeholder preparedness reviews, capability gap analysis, and regional catastrophic plans.
- Learning about and supporting the stakeholder engagement activities including developing meeting materials, agendas, presentations, invites, reminder emails, attending meetings with clients, documenting attendance, taking detailed notes, and providing follow-up documents and communications.
- Learning about and supporting the administrative support to project managers, proposal development and technical writing of proposals, identifying recommendations for technical guidance and process improvement, and developing internal references and guides.
- Pursue continuous expansion of knowledge and understanding of the emergency management profession through research, independent study, training courses, and certifications.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Actively enrolled or recent graduate of a degree program from an accredited college or university with a major in public administration, emergency management, public safety, humanitarian aid, business administration, or related field.
- Standard office procedures and basic computer operations to include a working and functional use (preferred intermediate to advanced) of all Microsoft Office applications including Word, Outlook, and Excel as well as smartphone /text usage.
Preferred Qualifications:
Novice level experience with:
- Demonstrating self-motivation, time management, organization, working as part of a team, and building positive internal and external relationships.
Novice level knowledge of:
- Emergency management concepts, including disaster phases, core capabilities, incident command, and national preparedness.
Novice level skills and ability to:
- Communicate effectively in writing, developing written reports, drafting memos and client emails, summarizing research, and meeting notes.
- Apply technology and applications, such as Microsoft Office software suite, project planning tools (e.g., Smartsheets or MS Project), as well as web tools (e.g., surveys, schedulers, virtual meeting applications) and basic interactive maps, effectively.
- Work as part of a team across various disciplines and projects, build positive relationships with clients, appropriately address conflict resolution, and promote the general welfare and common goals of a diverse set of personnel, clients, stakeholders, and leadership.
