🚀 Your mission

We need full stack developers to deliver on our product and build the best tech ever seen in the industry. You will get involved in all parts of the development process with full autonomy and surrounded by the best experts. We believe in smart, capable and innovative people that take the initiative and own their code from planning to deployment and maintenance. We own one of the most exciting tech stacks you will see, from various digital products (native apps, web apps) to the latest stack (react native, JS Node) and Internet-of-Things/health analytics. 🦸‍♀️ How you will contribute:

  • Plan and architect new features;

  • Code for both backend and frontend;

  • Design and create both unit and integration tests;

  • Deploy your code to AWS;

  • Analyse the performance of your code in production and re-architect for bottlenecks, using automated monitoring tools where appropriate;

  • Execute in Agile development, in focused squads, using Agile methodologies and continuous improvement;

  • Maintain your code as necessary with bug fixes and patches;

  • Drive improvement across Birdie, collaborating where appropriate to continuously improve the products and services we offer.

  • Are passionate about writing clean, concise, well-tested code, but you’re also a pragmatic problem-solver;

  • Are someone who gets things done and is willing to step up, roll up your sleeves and take responsibility; Able to work efficiently with little supervision and with a high degree of self-motivation and accountability;

  • You follow the best practices for the technologies you work with and understand why;

  • You're ferociously curious, love learning new things and teaching others about them;

  • You stay up to date with the latest technologies;

  • You're obsessed with team efficiency, collaboration and focus;

  • You can operate without ego to discuss, learn, grow, and help others do the same

  • Have proficiency in React & React Native and related tech (Redux, Redux-saga, offline-first...) ;

  • Have proficiency with NodeJS ;

  • Have knowledge of Relational databases ;

  • Have knowledge of Automated testing ;

  • Have knowledge of common design patterns ;

  • Have strong analytical and performance optimisation skills ;

  • A deep capacity to get things done ;

  • Are someone who is inspired by, and seeks to embody our values.

✨ Compensation

Our salary packages are competitive, the role is £62,000 - £65,000 per annum in the UK. We also grant generous stock options to any permanent employee at the end of the probation period. We adjust salaries based on the cost of living index for employees based outside of the UK.

🏝 Location

This role will need to be based in one of the following countries; UK, Spain, Ireland, Germany or France. We organise regular in-person events and online socials to make sure you can meet up with peers. If you want to come to the offices in London or Berlin, you’re most welcome of course! Birdie cannot currently support any visa applications, we do require permanent right to work in the role’s location

Growth is key. You'll have an annual personal development budget to put towards books, courses, trainings and conferences; continuous coaching within the team and with external experts.

Making your workspace comfortable is important to us, you’ll have access to a WFH equipment budget to ensure you have what you need.

🌴 Base holiday

33 days base holiday (25 days + 8 bank holidays).

🎄 Christmas leave

Birdie closes between Christmas and New Year so you can have some down time with your loved ones. This is in addition to your base holiday!

An extra day off for your birthday (you can take this whenever you want during the year).

We recognise that sometimes a longer break is desired, that’s why as of 2024 we have introduced a sabbatical policy. When you have been with us for 4 years you can take up to 3 months off.

Highly favourable parental leave policy; once you have spent twelve consecutive months on our payroll, primary caregivers are entitled to 26 weeks of parental leave at 100% of your usual salary and secondary caregivers are entitled to 12 weeks of parental leave, at 100% of your usual salary.

🐣 Fertility Leave

Birdie recognises the emotional and physical challenges which may arise during fertility treatments, and supports all Birdies by offering 5 additional paid days of leave.

👵🏻 Employer pension contribution

Birdie contributes 4% of your salary to your pension when you contribute 5% (UK Birdies).

Studies show that having a bird as a companion can improve your quality of life. In the same way, having birdie as the companion for your care business can help improve the quality of life of those you care for, and support your care team wherever they go.

We’re all getting older

Thanks to the advancement of modern medicine, life expectancy keeps increasing. 30% of people born now will live to be more than 100 years old. Today, there are 700 million older adults in the world. By the end of the century, there will be more than 2.5 billion - a shift from 9% to 23% of the world’s population. Although our elders are all living longer, they currently still fall sick around the same age as generations before - putting increasing demand and cost pressure on the adult social care provision system. We need to come together to support this new social landscape enthusiastically and at scale.

Homecare is the way forward

In the UK, the government adult social reform policy paper released last December highlights that we need to “shift away from a reliance on residential care, and offer people genuine options for drawing on outstanding care at home and in the community” (source). A 2021 study shows that care at home is significantly cheaper as a whole for an equal or better health outcomes. Data also shows that nine out of ten Brits aged 65 and over would prefer to stay at home with a visiting carer, rather than move in with family or into a care home. That’s understandable - our homes are where we make precious memories, feel safest and retain independence.

Tech makes homecare smarter

Smart technology already allows us to get the most out of our work and social lives. Data enabled insights not only allow for personalised recommendations, but also predict what may be coming our way in the future. Now imagine that data being used to capture illnesses early, or to alert a care professional if a fall may be about to happen!
