IT Lead (EST Time Zones)

Unlock hiring excellence with Ashby’s all-in-one recruiting platform.

Ashby

Employee count: 51-200

Salary: 140k-180k USD

United States only

I am Frank, Head of Security & IT at Ashby, and I'm looking for our first dedicated IT hire to join Ashby.

I started my career racking and running Linux servers, firewalls, and switches in data centers. I then switched to Corporate IT, where I helped several companies scale (e.g., Credit Karma, Lattice). I typically came in as the first hire and set up processes and teams. A couple of years ago, I decided to use the security knowledge I gained in Corporate IT and focus on Information Security for the remainder of my career.

After I joined Ashby, I implemented some tools and processes on the IT side that helped Ashby scale and its employees work more efficiently.

Now, I am looking for the first dedicated IT hire to join Ashby, be the primary contact for all things IT, and continue the build-out of our IT function. There will be some user-facing support as well as work in the backend systems we use (e.g., Okta). I will still be around to help and provide guidance if asked, but I’ll trust you to take care of IT independently.

I think it’s important to reassess processes and tools as a company grows constantly: what worked with 100 people and one hire a week does not work anymore with a company of 400 people and five new hires every week. Therefore, I am looking for a person who sets a high bar for their work and the work of others, is responsive, and considers the long-term effects and challenges when addressing a problem.

It's an exciting time to join Ashby! We have notable customers like Notion, Linear, Shopify, and Snowflake. Our growth and retention metrics are best-in-class among our peers: we have tens of millions in ARR, growing >100% year over year, very low churn, and many years of runway. We’ll share more details once we meet.

Role Requirements

  • Customer Service Orientation

  • Strategic thinking and experience with owning the IT function

  • Attention to detail but striving for execution

  • 3+ years of experience in a similar role

  • Familiar with working and troubleshooting in an international remote environment

  • You have set up Okta from scratch, including HRIS sync, SCIM and ideally Okta Workflows

  • Kandji or similar MDM

  • Apple Mac best practices

  • Google Workspace

You should apply if

  • You bring strong technical depth as an individual contributor, have experience in fast-scaling environments, and are excited about laying the foundation for a future IT team.

  • You've helped build out an IT function at a startup before, know what to expect, and are excited to do it again - this time with the benefit of hindsight and a clear vision for doing it even better

  • You are curious and want to learn new technologies and solutions

  • You want to provide phenomenal customer service but can also enforce rules and policies

  • You are constantly looking for improvements to the status quo

  • You like scheduling and managing tasks and projects on your own

You should not apply if

  • You’re not interested in being the technical lead or thinking strategically about how IT should scale with the company.

  • You prefer being part of a well-established team rather than shaping the function from the ground up as the first IT hire.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and equity.

  • 10-year exercise window for stock options. You shouldn’t feel pressure to purchase stock options if you leave Ashby —do it when you feel financially comfortable.

  • Twelve weeks of fully paid family leave in the US. We plan to expand this to employees in other countries as situations arise.

  • Generous equipment, software, and office furniture budget. Get what you need to be happy and productive!

  • $100/month education budget with more expensive items (like conferences) covered with manager approval.

  • If you’re in the US, top-notch health insurance for you and your dependents with all premiums covered by us.

Ashby provides equal employment opportunities (EEO) to all employees and applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, genetics, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. Unlock hiring excellence with Ashby’s all-in-one recruiting platform. Empowering ambitious teams from Seed to IPO.

If you’re reading this, odds are that you already know this: hiring for top tier talent has become exponentially harder and more important in the last 5 - 10 years.

Why is that? I believe there are at least three core reasons worth calling out.

  • First, with the number of high growth and venture backed companies increasing significantly, competition for that top talent is fiercer than ever. Even in the current, cooler market environment, it is still very challenging to hire top talent in many roles.

  • Second, top-tier companies are growing their revenues at rates not seen 5–10 years ago. In these high growth companies talent is the biggest bottleneck. This means that hitting hiring goals has become mission critical, leading recruiting functions to become more strategic and operationally minded.

  • Third, the pandemic era has accelerated many of these trends. Remote hiring has made talent markets more efficient leading to candidates being matched with more companies at a faster pace. It has also made the logistics of interviewing easier, leading to faster interview loops which has further shortened the time that top tier candidates are in-market.

We’re convinced there’s a lot of room for improvement in not just recruiting tools but people tools and, in general, how software products are built. There are two parts to this: the quality of the product and how the product is made.

Let's start with outputs. We are continuously disappointed about the state of software products today —software should be more intelligent, powerful, and doing much more for us. Today, most business software is still a simple database with few delightful and truly helpful features.

We also believe that productivity in software engineering hasn't increased nearly as much as it should have. Part of that is the lack of building blocks that can be reused across features and applications. The other part is how teams are organized and managed. We aim to innovate in both areas.

Outside of the domain we're building for today (people software and, more specifically, recruiting software), Ashby is also an experiment in how fast a team can build great products over many, many years.

What we value

We'll go into a lot more detail when speaking with you, but our core values are:

  • Ownership

  • Thinking long term

  • Curiosity & continuous improvement

  • Thoughtful communication

  • Transparency and honesty

Traction & Investors

We have many customers and great revenue growth. Customers love Ashby; we have a large library of amazing customer calls and quotes! We also have amazing investors like YCombinator, Elad Gil, and Lachy Groom. We'll share more once we meet.

Why join now?

As an early team member you will help shape:

  1. The direction of our product and our go-to-market strategy

  2. Our company culture, practices, and processes - Maintaining a nimble, remote organization at scale is a hard problem we want to solve and we’d love your help. Many of our employees have influenced or made significant changes as we’ve grown.

  3. Our hiring process - We care deeply about hiring the best talent. Everyone at Ashby has helped build and shape our interviews.

We’re at an exciting point where a lot is working (customers keep referring Ashby!), but the opportunity is immense, and there's much more to build & shape. Our open positions are listed below.
