Computational scientist turning Bayesian modeling into rigorous machine learning for complex biological and physical systems.
What I'm looking for
I’m a PhD computational scientist with 21 peer-reviewed publications (13 first-author) and six years as an NIH postdoctoral fellow. I model complex biological and physical systems using Bayesian inference, predictive/inferential modeling, and statistical analysis of high-dimensional, noisy data.
In recent independent work, I apply that foundation across the machine learning workflow—framing problems, feature engineering, classical and deep learning models, and rigorous cross-validation and calibration. I build end-to-end pipelines (scikit-learn and TensorFlow) and use Optuna-style hyperparameter tuning with probability calibration for reliable predictions.
My projects include HealthPass, a patient-controlled health information exchange prototype with consent controls, an audit log, and medication tracking (React/TypeScript). I also develop interactive EDA and visualization tools for COVID-19 using live public data, combining engineering, statistical probing, and user-focused deliverables.
Experience
Work history, roles, and key accomplishments
Data Preparation & Evaluation
Jan 2021 - Present (5 years 6 months)
Completed an end-to-end tabular classification workflow covering EDA, feature engineering, data cleaning/imputation, and feature selection. Compared classical machine learning with neural tabular models in TensorFlow using repeated stratified K-fold cross-validation, probability calibration, and Optuna hyperparameter tuning.
HealthPass prototype
Jan 2021 - Present (5 years 6 months)
Built a patient-controlled HealthPass prototype to consolidate and share medical records with providers via QR code, link, clipboard, or printout. Implemented consent controls, provider-access audit logging, and multi-dose medication tracking with an incrementally testable architecture.
COVID-19 Visualization & EDA
Jan 2021 - Present (5 years 6 months)
Built interactive COVID-19 visualizations including maps, animated time-series, and widget-driven charts. Pulled live data from the Virginia Department of Health (Socrata API) and U.S. Census Bureau and performed (partial) correlation analyses across U.S. congressional districts and covariates.
Postdoctoral Fellow, Lab Modeling
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Jan 2010 - Jun 2016 (6 years 5 months)
Developed computational and machine learning models for biological systems in high-dimensional, noisy experimental settings using Bayesian inference and statistical modeling. Produced multiple peer-reviewed publications covering model selection, robustness/network analysis, sequence-phenotype inference, and quantitative trait locus mapping.
Instructor, FAES at NIH
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Jan 2013 - Jan 2014 (1 year)
Served as an instructor at the Foundation for Advanced Education in the Sciences (FAES) at NIH.
Developed mathematical models for quantum nanosystems and supported team integration of multiscale theory into molecular dynamics software (NAMD).
Developed multiscale theory applied to biological systems, leading to peer-reviewed publications across topics including lipid self-assembly and nanocapsule drug delivery. Taught undergraduate chemistry and biochemistry/statistical mechanics courses.
Research Assistant, Chemistry Dept.
American University of Beirut
Jun 2000 - Aug 2002 (2 years 2 months)
Conducted experiments on the dynamics of Liesegang pattern formation, resulting in peer-reviewed publications.
