The story of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is one of rapid evolution and profound impact, transforming from a modest extension center into a global powerhouse of research and education. While its official establishment as an autonomous institution dates to 1969, its roots run much deeper, anchoring back to the 1859 founding of the Medical College of Alabama and the 1936 opening of the Birmingham Extension Center. What began as a localized effort to provide higher education opportunities has blossomed into Alabama's largest single employer and a premier public research university.

Over the decades, UAB has carved out a unique identity, distinct from its parent system, by intertwining academic rigor with a world-class medical center. Today, UAB stands as a beacon of innovation in the heart of Birmingham, driving the region's economic renaissance and serving as a critical hub for healthcare and biotechnology. With a diverse community of over 20,000 students and a workforce exceeding 26,000, the university continues to push boundaries, fostering an environment where groundbreaking research meets real-world application to improve lives across the globe.
