At the heart of Independent Health is a deeply ingrained culture of care and community, a philosophy that has been the cornerstone of the organization since its inception in 1980. Born from a graduate school project at the University at Buffalo, the company was founded on the forward-thinking principle that a health maintenance organization (HMO) focused on preventive care could significantly benefit the Western New York community. This foundational mission, to enable affordable access to quality healthcare, continues to drive every decision and initiative. The company's commitment is delivered through what they proudly call the 'RedShirt® Treatment' – a promise of exceptional, empathetic customer service that treats every member, partner, and associate like family.
