The story of Costain begins in 1865 on the Isle of Man, where Richard Costain and his future brother-in-law, Richard Kneen, decided to leave their farming roots behind. They crossed the Irish Sea to the booming port of Liverpool, establishing themselves as jobbing builders. What started as a small partnership quickly gained momentum, and by the turn of the century, the company had expanded its footprint across Lancashire and into South Wales, building houses for munitions workers during the First World War.

In the 1920s, the company made a strategic move to London, purchasing the Walton Heath Land Company and developing large executive estates around Croydon. This era marked a significant turning point, culminating in the company's flotation on the London Stock Exchange in 1933. Following this public listing, Costain pivoted towards major civil engineering projects, securing contracts for the Trans-Iranian Railway and later playing a critical role in the Second World War by constructing Royal Ordnance Factories and the famous Mulberry harbours for D-Day.

Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, Costain cemented its reputation as a global engineering powerhouse. The company delivered iconic infrastructure such as the Thames Barrier, protecting London from floods, and was a key partner in the consortium that built the Channel Tunnel, one of the most ambitious construction projects in history. Today, under the leadership of CEO Alex Vaughan, Costain has transformed into a smart infrastructure solutions business. No longer just a builder of concrete and steel, the company now integrates cutting-edge digital technology to solve complex challenges in energy, water, transportation, and defence, ensuring the UK's critical infrastructure is sustainable and resilient for the future.
