About Wikimedia Endowment

The Wikimedia Endowment is a permanent fund established to safeguard Wikipedia's future and ensure the long-term sustainability of free knowledge. Launched in January 2016 on Wikipedia's 15th anniversary, the Endowment operates as an independent U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization administered in partnership with the Tides Foundation. Its core mission is to provide enduring financial stability for Wikipedia and related Wikimedia projects, serving as both a safety net during uncertain times and a springboard for innovation during prosperous periods.

As of June 2024, the Endowment is valued at $144 million, having reached its initial goal of $100 million ahead of schedule in June 2021. The Endowment follows a 4% spending policy based on a rolling three-year average of its portfolio value. Since 2023, it has begun using investment income to fund strategic grants focused on technical innovation, including investments in Wikidata, Abstract Wikipedia, machine learning infrastructure, Kiwix for offline access, and MediaWiki improvements. The Endowment represents a collective commitment to preserving the world's largest collection of human knowledge for generations to come.
