Senior Software Engineer

YOUR MISSION: Your mission is to build and evolve the Dispatch platform that connects our customers with the right service providers during roadside incidents. Dispatch is at the heart of how Urgently delivers real-time assistance, and this role owns the feasibility, design, and delivery of Dispatch capabilities with a strong focus on reliability, speed, and operational quality. You’ll work closely with Product and Operations to ensure Dispatch decisions are accurate, scalable, and resilient under real-world conditions.

YOUR LEGACY: Your legacy will be the stability, scalability, and evolution of the Dispatch platform. This includes building and maintaining core Dispatch services, improving provider assignment and workflows, and raising the bar on system reliability and operational excellence for one of Urgently’s most mission-critical systems. The result? You helped Urgently become the world’s leading mobility assistance company.

WHAT YOU’LL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR:

1) First 2 months:

• Ramp up on Urgently’s platform architecture, development environment, and engineering philosophy
• Develop a strong understanding of the Dispatch system, including provider assignment, workflows, integrations, and operational dependencies
• Become productive in the Dispatch codebase, deployment process, and on-call/operational workflows

2) First 6 months:

• Fully understand the mission and business goals of the Dispatch platform
• Take ownership of the development and stability of core Dispatch services
• Partner closely with Product to design and deliver Dispatch features, working through requirements, tradeoffs, and edge cases
• Improve Dispatch services using modern, scalable approaches while maintaining performance and reliability

3) Ongoing...

• Design, build, and evolve features within the Dispatch system
• Own Dispatch services end to end: development, deployment, monitoring, and operational stability
• Participate in day-to-day execution while influencing longer-term technical direction for Dispatch

WHO YOU ARE:

Technical Foundation

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field
• 7+ years of software development experience in backend, distributed systems environments
• Strong, hands-on experience with:
• Java and the Java ecosystem
• Spring Boot, Spring MVC, and microservices architecture
• Data structures and core algorithms
• MySQL and NoSQL data stores
• Unit and system testing frameworks
• Git and modern version control workflows

Problem Solving & Creativity

• Creative thinker and strong problem solver who can navigate ambiguity
• Able to work through complex Dispatch scenarios and propose clear, practical solutions
• Partners with Product to shape solutions, not just implement tickets
• Proactively identifies issues and improvement opportunities before they impact operations

Ownership & Accountability

• Strong ownership mindset for mission-critical Dispatch systems
• Takes responsibility for quality, performance, and real-world system behavior
• Comfortable operating and supporting the services they build, including incident follow-ups

Technical Leadership

• Acts as a technical leader within the Dispatch domain
• Mentors' engineers and raises the bar for design, code quality, and system reliability
• Clearly articulates designs, tradeoffs, and implementation plans to the broader team

Execution

• Detail-oriented with a strong emphasis on maintainability and documentation
• Balances delivery speed with correctness, resilience, and scalability
• Makes pragmatic decisions aligned with both technical and business needs

Nice to Have Experience:

• Experience with Apache Solr / Elasticsearch
• Experience with Test-Driven Development
• Experience with logistics software (delivery, transportation, route planning)

THE NITTY GRITTY:

• Location = Great news! This position is remote and you have the option of working from anywhere in the U.S.!
• Manager = You’ll report to Senior Technical Lead
• Compensation = The base salary range for this position is $130,000 - $160,000. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
