Autonomy is not recommended, but a table-stakes requirement, and we work very hard to maintain our lead. Our team is hybrid, with our headquarters in a brand-new two-story office in Potrero Hill, San Francisco.

Our team and product remain lean because we are incredibly customer-oriented: we frequently travel the country to meet with and learn from our customers. To this day, most of our customers have been referred to us through word of mouth. With our unique advantage and fast momentum in this $2 trillion market, we are poised to take Toma to the next level.

About this Role

We are seeking a Forward-Deployed Software Engineer to join our engineering team, with experience talking to customers, building integrations with 3rd party platforms, and architecting custom use-cases for our customers. Toma is the AI leader in the automotive industry because we have built highly customizable voice AI and agents from the ground up to solve for any customer use-cases. Our engineering team works hybrid in San Francisco.

Responsibilities

  • Owning our deployments on AWS, Porter, and various ML providers

  • Architecting, building, and deploying improvements to our stack

  • Deploying and maintaining self-hosted LLMs and other ML models

  • Engaging with software vendors and forming long-term partnerships

  • Solving novel problems with no a priori in a rapidly moving tech landscape

  • Improving reliability and operational excellence

Required Qualifications

  • A track record of excellence throughout your career

  • Exceptional coding skills and the ability to ship high-quality code at a high velocity

  • Proven prompt engineering ability and a desire to continuously learn

  • Strong problem ownership and drive

  • Passion and drive for talking to customers

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency with TypeScript, Bun, low‑level Node.js, the T3 Stack (Next.js, React, Prisma, PostgreSQL, NextAuth, tRPC), and Python.

  • Great understanding of operating systems and distributed systems
