As a Senior Product Designer at Tidepool, you will work fluidly and collaboratively with product managers, engineers, sales, healthcare professionals and patients to make meaningful contributions to Tidepool and the diabetes community. This role calls for a designer who is passionate about understanding and advocating for patient and clinician needs, thrives in ambiguity and technical complexity and is excited about defining the vision and user experience for Tidepool’s Data Management Platform.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Product Design

  • Lead design projects across Tidepool’s Data Management Platform as well as new products in development.

  • Translate broad need statements from patients and healthcare professionals into meaningful designs, balancing usability with safety regulations and technical considerations.

  • Communicate your data-informed vision and design rationale, that has users at the heart of it, to stakeholders and team members in a compelling way.

  • Partner closely with product, engineering and quality assurance engineers to drive design decisions and advocate for our users.

  • Solve a variety of product design challenges across iOS, Android, web and mobile web.

  • Build and manage a comprehensive design system and component library to maintain consistency.

  • Plan, design and lead a wide range of user research, including exploratory interviews and task-based usability testing.

  • Break down experiences thoughtfully for teams to ship value incrementally (from Minimum Valuable Experience to Desired Experience), making intentional trade-offs that are grounded in a clear perspective.

  • Develop deep understanding and empathy for people living with diabetes and healthcare providers and leverage that feedback to push for product refinement/improvement.

Leadership & Mentorship

We expect experienced product designers at Tidepool to support the product manager as a leader on the team, interfacing with external partners, guiding newer team members and creating alignment across teams to move a project forward.

  • Provide guidance and mentorship to less experienced design team members, interns and contractors.

  • Support the recruitment and hiring of multi-disciplinary design / product team members.

  • Help shape the culture of our growing design team.

  • Lead co-creation workshops as part of the analysis and design of new processes for internal and external teams.

Product Thinking

We expect experienced product designers at Tidepool to work closely with product managers to craft experiences that have the intended impact on their users through novel feature discovery, feature enhancement or collaborative feature definition.

  • Work closely with the product manager to define new feature concepts and influence the product strategy by establishing product and feature priorities.

  • Proactively manage prioritization challenges with your product team to ensure design focus areas are aligned with business goals.

  • Comfortable taking on roles outside of traditional design, including product management.

  • Develop expertise in various diabetes hardware and software technologies in order to create impactful design solutions.

We would love to consider you for this role if you have:

  • 6+ years of experience as a senior product designer or interaction designer or equivalent experience in visual design, experience design, etc.

  • A strong portfolio that demonstrates your practice of a design process solving problems for mobile and responsive web platforms.

  • Experience in healthcare, wellness or medical device industries

  • Experience executing designs in regulated, technical, or workflow-heavy domains with complex data and hardware constraints

  • Track record of project leadership, creative thinking, and cross functional collaboration in support of influencing product features including 0→1

  • Experience working in Tidepool’s task management system, Jira, to conduct design reviews and leave design feedback for engineers.

We love:

  • Experience designing data-rich experiences, including data visualization and dashboards that help people understand and act on complex information.

  • Experience designing for generative AI, LLMs, or machine learning interfaces

  • Designers that work independently to explore concepts from beginning to end, yet also seek out feedback loops with your ideas.

  • Experimentation with AI powered tools like Figma AI and Midjourney

  • A secret design sauce that you bring to every design team you’re on

Tidepool Loop is the first fully interoperable automated insulin dosing app, cleared by the FDA, that originated as a patient-led initiative.

About Tidepool

Tidepool is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We were founded by people with diabetes, caregivers, and leading healthcare providers committed to helping all people with insulin-requiring diabetes safely achieve great outcomes through more accessible, actionable, and meaningful diabetes data.

We are committed to empowering the next generation of innovations in diabetes management. We harness the power of technology to provide intuitive software products that help people with diabetes.

Tidepool intends to deliver Loop as a customer-supported, FDA-regulated mobile app in the App Store.

Our mission is to make diabetes data more accessible, actionable, and meaningful for people with diabetes, their care teams, and researchers.

Our commitment is, first and foremost, to the diabetes community

Many of us live with or care for someone with diabetes, and all of us are passionate advocates. We believe that together, our data is stronger and more meaningful. We're working to empower the next generation of diabetes innovation.

People with diabetes own their diabetes data. Period.

We provide you with intuitive, well-designed tools to access your data, and beyond that, you're in complete control of your data.

You control how much you share and who you share it with. You're also in control of the impact your data has on the rest of the diabetes world by, for example, donating your data anonymously for researchers, device makers, and innovators to use in research.

Our values

Always put people with diabetes first. Our software is designed for clinicians and people impacted by diabetes. We have chosen to be a nonprofit organization so that we can always prioritize the needs of the diabetes community over profit-maximizing investors.

Operate with openness and transparency. We value openness and transparency with our users, supporters, and team. Our code and designs are open source — our employee handbook is, too. You can always see what we’re working on to improve the diabetes community’s relationship with their data.

Engage with regulators and help improve regulations. We operate in a highly regulated space, including FDA (Food and Drug Administration), HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), and other regulations. We interpret regulations in a way that is best for the safety of people with diabetes and the efficacy of the products we deliver. We engage early and often with regulators, and work with them to embrace modern software development techniques and processes.

Start small and iterate quickly. We believe that the best path to safety, efficacy, usability, and functionality is to start small and then iterate. We often deliver a Minimum Viable Product and iterate and update based on feedback from real users in the real world.

Embrace the unknown. As a company, we realize that we won't have all of the answers. We believe in listening to our users and making changes based on their feedback. We also make the underlying platform of our software available to other developers and innovators, and allow our users to access their data through other applications and services of their choice.

Fight the default of exclusion. Inequality and exclusion are the defaults of software development and medical device industries. Without intentional effort to address barriers to access, we inherit those failings and worsen the problem. Building a diverse team is a moral imperative, and we build a better business and product by bringing different perspectives to the table. We continue to look to build a team of diverse voices because they are the only ones that help us grow.
