About Beam
Beam's story began in 2018, born from the vision of Yale classmates Alan Jiang and Deb Gangopadhyay. They saw a future for dense Asian cities where personal car ownership would give way to a more efficient and sustainable model: shared electric vehicles. Their journey started with e-scooters, laying the foundation for a multi-modal micromobility platform that would eventually include e-bikes and e-mopeds. Alan Jiang, with his prior experience leading Southeast Asian operations for Ofo and as Uber Indonesia's country manager, brought invaluable ride-sharing expertise to the venture. Deb Gangopadhyay complemented this with his background in founding tech companies, including ventures in e-commerce SaaS tools and marketing automation.
The company, headquartered in Singapore , quickly established itself as a key player in the burgeoning micromobility sector. Beam's mission was clear: to turn 'little drives into better rides' and help cities flow better for everyone. This involved not just providing vehicles, but also focusing on safety, convenience, and close collaboration with local regulators to meet the unique needs of Asian consumers and urban environments. Their approach resonated, and Beam rapidly expanded its operations across the Asia-Pacific region, launching services in Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, and later targeting markets like Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Turkey. A significant milestone in their growth was securing US$93 million in a Series B funding round in early 2022, which fueled further technological development and market expansion. Beam has consistently emphasized innovation, developing features like their Micro-mobility Augmented Riding Safety (MARS) technology and virtual docking systems to enhance rider safety and reduce city clutter. Their commitment extends to sustainability, with Beam being certified Climate Neutral since 2019 and aiming to be Carbon Negative.
