About MakeWay
MakeWay's story began in 2000, when a small group of philanthropists and changemakers on the West Coast of Canada asked a pivotal question: how can we foster a healthy planet and a just society? Originally founded as Tides Canada, the organization started with a focus on the Great Bear Rainforest, supporting historic First Nations-led conservation agreements. This early work set the stage for a unique approach to philanthropy—one that prioritized deep, trust-based relationships and community-led transformation.
Over the next two decades, the organization expanded its reach from coast to coast to coast, evolving into a national charity and public foundation. In June 2020, Tides Canada rebranded as MakeWay to better reflect its momentum and mission. Today, MakeWay operates as a 'shared platform,' providing administrative, governance, and strategic support to over 60 unique social change projects. By handling the operational heavy lifting, MakeWay empowers community leaders to focus on what they do best: building solutions for environmental and social justice. With a nimble 'Swiss Army Knife' toolkit of grants, impact investing, and advisory services, MakeWay continues to build a world where nature and communities thrive together.
