Neglected Tropical Diseases Program Research Associate Intern

FHI 360 has an exciting internship opportunity for a student interested in growing their skills within the international development sector. Under close supervision, an Intern will perform entry level professional duties which will provide the opportunity for professional training in various functional areas throughout the organization. Internship assignments serve to offer practical experience and broad exposure to a global nonprofit development organization.

The intern will work in the NTDs Department, specifically the USAID’s Act to End Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) | West Program (“Act | West”) – a USAID-funded program to support the elimination of NTDs in Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo. The project seeks to build upon the achievements of USAID’s previous NTD investments (2010–2019) in West Africa in their efforts to eliminate lymphatic filariasis (LF) and trachoma as a public health problem, and the elimination of onchocerciasis (OV) in selected countries. It aims to make NTD programs capable of sustaining treatment for long-term control programs for schistosomiasis (SCH), soil transmitted helminthes (STH) and OV, and mainstream NTD programs into the national health system.

This is a paid internship with a flexible schedule based on project needs.

Anticipated Duration: Summer 2024 Semester: mid-May – mid-August

Location: Remote, USA (strong preference given to candidates residing in Eastern time zone)

Hours: Part time, 20 -30 hours per week

Pay Rate: $23.00 – $25.00/hour

• Shadowing, mentoring, and training opportunities with successful research, technical, and/or program management professionals
• Experience working with an inter-disciplinary team addressing global development challenges
• Practical experience on global NTDs elimination programs, knowledge of NTDs and careers in NTDs.

Anticipated Project(s) and Assignment Details:

The intern may contribute to various team or project activities under the direction of their supervisor in the following ways:

• Contribute to research or project activities as assigned by supervisor
• The intern will support literature review on progress of elimination of lymphatic filariasis globally and especially in West Africa
• Conduct desk reviews, landscape analyses and/or secondary data analyses
• Organize and participate in team meetings and country calls (e.g., assisting with meeting preparation, meeting minutes, a post-meeting report)
• Contribute to project-related presentations, blogs, reports and/or manuscripts
• Assist with project-related administrative tasks, as needed

Qualifications and Competencies:

• Currently enrolled in a master’s degree program at a college or university in Public Health, Global Health, Social Science or a related field of study or within one year of graduation date
• Demonstrated interest in Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) through studies, work experience, and/or personal travel preferred
• Energetic and eager to tackle new projects and ideas
• Strong writing and research skills. Please submit a writing sample between 1 to 2 pages
• Articulate, professional, and able to communicate in a clear, positive manner
• Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English
