Echoing Green's story began in 1987, born from the vision of the growth equity firm General Atlantic. Named after a William Blake poem that evokes the creation of a better world, the organization embarked on a mission to apply proven venture capital strategies to the burgeoning social sector. Their very first investment in an emerging leader was Diana Propper de Callejon, who was pioneering an alternative economic model for Amazonian residents, one that didn't rely on deforestation. This foundational act set the stage for decades of impact. General Atlantic remains a steadfast supporter, and Diana Propper de Callejon has served on Echoing Green's Board of Directors, a testament to the enduring nature of their initial vision.

A pivotal moment in Echoing Green's journey arrived in 2002 when Cheryl L. Dorsey, herself an Echoing Green Fellow from 1992, took the helm as President. Under her leadership, the organization transformed into a global nonprofit, significantly shaping its trajectory and expanding its reach.
