As part of the Empowering Insights & Reporting Pillar at Attentive, the Business Intelligence Engineering group transforms complex data into actionable insights and impactful reporting. We empower clients and internal teams with the metrics, analytics, reports, and visualizations needed to make informed decisions and shape strategies that drive meaningful growth. As a backend-focused Software Engineer II on the BI Reporting Team, you will collaborate with engineers, product managers, and designers to develop innovative applications that help marketers connect with consumers. You will build and maintain Java Spring Boot services powering client-facing UI reports, charts and dashboards. You’ll partner with frontend-focused developers to design and build full-stack solutions, and will have occasional opportunities to contribute frontend code using React and TypeScript. Initially working under the guidance of more senior software engineers, you will become increasingly independent over time to the point of leading your own projects.
What You'll Accomplish
- Develop and maintain scalable backend systems for our customer-facing products, ensuring high performance and reliability
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to build applications that support multi-channel communications for marketers
- Partner with Product Management and Design to meet the user’s needs without sacrificing quality or accruing tech debt
- Improve code quality through code reviews, testing, and advocating for best practices
- Identify and address technical debt to ensure the long-term health of our codebase
- Contribute to technical decisions and stay current with emerging technologies to enhance our products
Your Expertise
- 3+ years of professional experience in software development, focusing on backend systems
- Proficiency in Java, Python, or Go, with a strong understanding of object-oriented programming
- Experience building and maintaining scalable, high-performance applications
- Proven experience working with databases such as MySQL or PostgreSQL
- You have previously collaborated with frontend developers and are open to taking on occasional frontend tasks
- Solid understanding of software development best practices, including code reviews, writing tests, and continuous integration
- Excellent communication skills, and the proven ability to collaborate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- You have experience being on-call and respond quickly during an incident to troubleshoot and resolve issues
Nice to Haves
- Frontend development experience with frameworks like React or Angular
- Proven experience working with data, including SQL, data analysis, and data engineering
- Familiarity with AWS services, cloud infrastructure, and workflow orchestration tools like Airflow or Temporal
- Practical knowledge of DevOps practices and tools, including Docker and Kubernetes, for containerization and orchestration
What We Use
- Our infrastructure runs primarily in Kubernetes hosted in AWS’s EKS. Infrastructure tooling includes Istio, Datadog, Terraform, CloudFlare, and Helm
- Our backend is Java / Spring Boot microservices, built with Gradle, coupled with things like DynamoDB, Kinesis, Temporal, AirFlow, Postgres, and Redis, hosted via AWS
- Our frontend is built with React and TypeScript, and uses best practices like GraphQL, Storybook, Radix UI, Vite, esbuild, and Playwright
- Our machine learning is driven by custom and open source machine learning models, lots of data and built with Python, Anyscale, Tecton, Metaflow, HuggingFace, PyTorch, TensorFlow, and Pandas

- The US base salary range for this full-time position is $126,480 - $180,000 annually + equity + benefits
