Nils Benning

@nilsbenning

I build molecular and single-molecule workflows to study genome organization, biomolecular interactions, and lipid delivery systems.

I'm completing my PhD research in the Ha Lab at Johns Hopkins University and Boston Children’s Hospital, where I investigate how nucleosome positioning, chromatin condensation, and chromatin accessibility shape genome organization.

I use single-molecule imaging, genome-wide sequencing assays, and custom Python and MATLAB analysis pipelines to establish structure-function relationships in protein–nucleic acid, biomolecular, and nanoparticle assemblies. My work includes smFRET, SiMPull, TIRF microscopy, fluorescence imaging, nucleic acid condensation, and quantitative single-particle analysis.

I've built construct-engineering workflows spanning plasmid and vector design, Gibson assembly, site-directed mutagenesis, in vitro transcription, and sequence validation. I also develop lipid delivery models and have supervised five junior researchers while contributing to cross-campus professional development programming.
