Conrad Achilonu
@conradachilonu
Research Scientist specializing in microbial pathogenesis, molecular biology, cellular biology, and therapeutic development.
What I'm looking for
I am a research scientist with expertise in microbial pathogenesis, host–pathogen interactions, RNA biology, and nanoparticle applications, currently working in a thoracic diseases research unit. My work has validated phosphoglucomutase (PGM) as an antifungal target, established precision-cut lung slices (PCLS) as an ex vivo model for Pneumocystis, and advanced characterization of Candida auris and Aspergillus fumigatus molecular biology.
I hold a PhD in Genetics and have led multidisciplinary projects spanning clinical biliary microbiome studies, nanoparticle antifungal and anticancer evaluations, RNAi-mediated pathogen control, NGS and single-cell RNA-seq analyses, and supervised graduate research. I contribute regularly to publications, grant writing, and teaching, and I combine wet-lab skills with bioinformatics to translate discoveries into potential therapeutic strategies.

Researcher
Mayo Clinic
Oct 2024 - Present (1 year)
Led molecular and functional characterization of fungal phosphoglucomutase (PGM) in Aspergillus fumigatus and Candida auris, validated PGM as an antifungal target, and established mouse precision-cut lung slices (PCLS) as an ex vivo model for Pneumocystis pathogenesis and antifungal screening.
Postdoctoral Research Fellow
University of the Free State
Sep 2023 - Oct 2024 (1 year 1 month)
Investigated biliary mycobiome in ERCP patients, characterised antifungal resistance genes and evaluated nanoparticle therapeutics and drug combinations against multidrug-resistant fungal pathogens, contributing to clinical research databases and manuscript/grant development.
Postdoctoral Research Fellow
University of the Free State
