Role Overview
We are seeking a passionate and experienced Guide Dog Training Manager to oversee our comprehensive guide dog training programs. This role is vital in ensuring the highest standards of training for both dogs and their future handlers, facilitating greater independence for individuals with visual impairments. You will leverage your expertise to develop effective training methodologies, mentor trainers, and enhance our program's impact on the community.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement innovative training programs that adhere to best practices in guide dog training and handler education
- Mentor and lead a team of guide dog trainers, providing guidance on advanced training techniques and behavioral assessments
- Collaborate with external stakeholders, including local communities and rehabilitation professionals, to promote awareness and understanding of guide dog services
- Evaluate and assess the progress of training for each guide dog, ensuring they meet pre-determined performance metrics
- Develop and maintain training documentation, ensuring compliance with industry standards and organizational policies
- Conduct regular workshops and seminars for trainers and volunteers to ensure continuous development and engagement
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required:
- 5+ years of experience in dog training, preferably with a focus on service or guide dog training
- Proven track record of managing training programs and mentoring trainers
- Strong understanding of canine behavior and training methodologies
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse audiences
Preferred:
- Certification from a recognized dog training organization
- Experience working directly with individuals with disabilities and knowledge of accessibility issues
- Familiarity with adaptive technologies and resources available for visually impaired individuals
Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies
- Proficient in dog training software and tracking systems for monitoring training progress
- Knowledge of canine health and welfare standards
