Role Overview
We are seeking a passionate and experienced Guide Dog Training Manager to lead our innovative training program, focused on empowering individuals with visual impairments through the life-changing partnership with guide dogs. This role involves overseeing the development and implementation of training protocols, ensuring high standards of animal care, and fostering a culture of excellence in both canine and human interactions.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and implement comprehensive training programs for guide dogs, ensuring adherence to industry standards and best practices
- Manage a team of trainers, providing mentorship, guidance, and support to enhance their professional development and training techniques
- Collaborate with veterinarians and behaviorists to ensure the optimal health and well-being of all guide dogs in training
- Conduct assessments of training progress and effectiveness, utilizing data-driven approaches to adjust programs as necessary
- Engage with clients to understand their specific needs and facilitate successful partnerships with guide dogs
- Promote community outreach programs to raise awareness about the benefits of guide dogs and advocate for individuals with visual impairments
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required:
- 5+ years of experience in dog training, with a focus on guide dogs or service animals
- Proven leadership experience, including managing and developing training teams
- Strong knowledge of canine behavior, training methodologies, and animal welfare standards
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage and educate diverse audiences
- Compassionate and patient demeanor, with a genuine passion for improving the lives of individuals with disabilities
Preferred:
- Certification from a recognized dog training organization
- Experience in program development and community outreach initiatives
- Familiarity with assistive technology for individuals with visual impairments
Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies
- Expertise in positive reinforcement training techniques and behavior modification
- Proficient in using training equipment and tools, including clickers and harnesses
- Experience with record-keeping and assessment tools to track dog training progress
