Role Overview
As an Apprentice Guide Dog Instructor, you will play a crucial role in shaping the future of service animals and the independence of individuals with visual impairments. You will work closely with experienced instructors to learn the intricacies of dog training, focusing on developing the skills necessary to instruct and support guide dogs in a structured environment.
Responsibilities
Training and Development:
- Assist in the training of guide dogs, including basic obedience, advanced mobility skills, and public access training
- Observe and participate in training sessions, taking detailed notes to understand different training methodologies
- Support the assessment of guide dog candidates and their suitability for partnership with individuals with visual impairments
- Engage in hands-on training experiences, fostering a strong bond between instructor and dog
Client Interaction:
- Participate in team meetings to discuss trainer and client feedback, adjusting training approaches as needed
- Assist in preparing guide dog teams for public access evaluations and ensure they meet established standards
- Support clients in understanding the role of their guide dog and provide post-training follow-up assistance
Administrative Duties:
- Maintain accurate training records and documentation for each guide dog in training
- Assist in organizing training schedules and resources to ensure efficient operations
- Participate in community outreach programs to educate the public about the importance of guide dogs
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent; coursework in animal behavior, training, or related field preferred
- Strong interest in animal training, specifically with guide dogs or service animals
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
Preferred:
- Experience working with dogs in a training or caregiving capacity
- Knowledge of canine behavior and training techniques
- Familiarity with the needs and challenges faced by individuals with visual impairments
Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies
- Basic understanding of dog training principles and techniques
- Familiarity with positive reinforcement training methods
- Ability to utilize training equipment and tools effectively
