Role Overview
We are seeking a passionate and experienced individual to lead our Guide Dog Training program. As the Head of Guide Dog Training, you will oversee the development and implementation of training methodologies that ensure our guide dogs are well-equipped to assist individuals with visual impairments. You will collaborate closely with staff, volunteers, and partner organizations to enhance the quality of our training programs and the overall experience of our clients.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement innovative training programs that align with best practices in canine training and behavior.
- Lead and mentor a team of trainers and volunteers to ensure high standards of training and welfare for the guide dogs.
- Develop assessment criteria to evaluate the effectiveness of training programs and the performance of guide dogs.
- Collaborate with external organizations to establish partnerships that enhance training opportunities and community outreach.
- Conduct workshops and training sessions for staff and volunteers to promote best practices in guide dog training.
- Monitor and report on the progress of guide dogs in training, ensuring they meet the necessary standards before placement.
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required:
- 5+ years of experience in dog training, with a focus on service or assistance dogs.
- Proven track record of developing and leading training programs, with strong knowledge of canine behavior and learning theory.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and motivate a diverse group of stakeholders.
Preferred:
- Experience with guide dog training specifically, including knowledge of mobility and orientation techniques.
- Certification from a recognized dog training organization.
- Background in animal behavior or veterinary sciences.
Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies
- Strong understanding of training methodologies, including positive reinforcement and behavior modification techniques.
- Experience with tracking and assessment tools for canine training evaluation.
- Familiarity with various training aids and technologies used in guide dog training.
