Getting Started as a Job Seeker

Create a free account on Himalayas, complete your profile to get matched with relevant remote jobs, and start applying.

How do I create a Himalayas account?

You can create a free account in two ways:

  1. Sign up with email: Go to Sign up, enter your name, email address, and a password. You will receive a verification email with a one-time code to confirm your address.
  2. Sign up with Google: Click "Sign in with Google" on the signup page to use your Google account. This skips the email verification step.

Both options are completely free. There is no credit card required.

What happens during onboarding?

After creating your account, Himalayas walks you through a short onboarding flow:

  1. Verify your email: If you signed up with email (not Google), you will enter a one-time verification code sent to your inbox. If you need to change the email address, you can do so from this screen. If the code does not arrive, you can request a new one.
  2. Upload your resume (optional): You can upload an existing resume (PDF or DOC format). Himalayas will parse it and pre-fill your profile with your work experience, education, and skills. This saves time and helps the platform match you with relevant jobs right away. You can skip this step and fill in your profile manually later.
  3. Explore Himalayas Plus (optional): You are shown what Himalayas Plus offers (AI resume builder, cover letters, mock interviews, headshots). You can subscribe now or skip and try these tools later.

After onboarding, you land on your home dashboard where you can start browsing jobs.

How do I complete my profile?

A complete profile helps Himalayas match you with relevant jobs and makes you visible to employers who are actively searching the talent directory. Your profile is marked as complete once you have filled in all four sections below. You can track your progress on the profile completion card on your dashboard.

Overview (required for profile completion)

Your basic professional identity. To count as complete, you need a username, location, intro, and bio filled in.

  • Name: Your full name as you want employers to see it
  • Username: Your unique Himalayas handle (sets your profile URL, e.g. himalayas.app/user/yourname)
  • Intro/headline: A short professional summary
  • Bio: A longer description of who you are, what you do, and what you are looking for
  • Location: Your city and country (used for timezone matching)
  • Timezone: Your working timezone (critical for remote job matching)
  • Profile photo: Upload a photo or use the AI Headshot Generator to create a professional one

Experience (required for profile completion)

Your work history. You need at least one experience entry for your profile to be complete. For each position you can add:

  • Job title, company name, and location
  • Employment type (full-time, part-time, contract, etc.)
  • Start and end dates (or mark as current)
  • Description of your role and accomplishments

Tip: Use specific, measurable accomplishments rather than generic descriptions. "Increased conversion rate by 23% through A/B testing" is more compelling than "Responsible for marketing."

Education

Your educational background:

  • Degree or program title
  • School or institution name
  • Start and end years
  • Optional description of relevant coursework or achievements

Tech Stack (required for profile completion)

The technologies, tools, and skills you work with. You need at least one tech stack item for your profile to be complete. This is also one of the most important sections for remote job matching.

Add every technology, language, framework, and tool you are proficient with. The more complete this section is, the more likely you are to find matching jobs and appear in relevant employer searches.

Preferences (required for profile completion)

Your job search preferences. To count as complete, you need a primary role, search status, salary expectations, working permits, and at least one skill filled in.

  • Primary role: The main job category you are looking for
  • Search status: Whether you are actively looking, open to offers, or closed to new roles
  • Salary expectations: Your expected salary range and preferred currency
  • Working permits: Countries where you are authorized to work
  • Skills: Specific skills relevant to your target roles
  • Seniority level: Entry, mid, senior, manager, etc.
  • Employment type: Full-time, part-time, contract, etc.
  • Availability: When you could start a new role

These preferences are used to generate your personalized job recommendations and job alert emails.

Why does my profile still show as incomplete?

If you have filled in all the sections above but your profile still shows as incomplete, give it a moment, the progress card can take a short time to refresh after you save changes. If it still does not update, double-check that each required field listed above has a value.

How do I search for remote jobs?

Go to the Jobs page to browse all available remote positions. Himalayas offers several ways to find the right job:

Type a job title, skill, or keyword (e.g., "product manager", "React", "customer support") into the search bar to find matching positions.

Filters

You can narrow results using multiple filters at once:

  • Experience level: Entry-level, mid-level, senior, manager, director, executive. You can select multiple levels.
  • Job type: Full-time, part-time, contractor, temporary, intern, volunteer. Multi-select supported.
  • Salary range: Set a minimum and maximum salary. You can change the currency (USD, EUR, GBP, and more) and the platform converts automatically. Jobs without salary data are excluded by default — enable "Include jobs without salary" to see them.
  • Skills: Filter by specific technologies and tools (e.g., Python, Figma, Salesforce)
  • Companies: Search for jobs from specific companies
  • Industries/markets: Filter by industry sector

Location and timezone filters

Remote jobs often have geographic or timezone requirements. Himalayas makes these easy to navigate:

  • By country: Browse jobs available in a specific country at /jobs/countries. For example, /jobs/countries/united-states shows all jobs open to US-based workers.
  • By timezone: Browse jobs by timezone overlap at /jobs/timezones. For example, if you are in UTC+1, you can see all jobs that accept your timezone.
  • Worldwide: Browse jobs with no location or timezone restrictions at /jobs/worldwide. These roles are truly open to anyone, anywhere.

What is the difference between location-restricted and worldwide jobs?

  • Location-restricted jobs require you to be based in a specific country or set of countries, often for legal, tax, or visa reasons
  • Timezone-restricted jobs require you to work during specific hours (e.g., "must overlap with US Eastern for at least 4 hours") but do not care where you are physically located
  • Worldwide jobs have no geographic or timezone restrictions — you can work from anywhere in the world

Sorting

You can sort results by:

  • Relevant (default) — Jobs ranked by how well they match your profile and preferences
  • Recent: Most recently posted jobs first

How do I apply for a job?

When you find a job you are interested in:

  1. Click on the job listing to view the full details
  2. Review the description, requirements, salary, and location/timezone restrictions
  3. Click the "Apply" button

Depending on the employer's setup, one of two things happens:

  • External application: You are redirected to the company's own careers page or application form. You complete the application on their site.
  • Email application: Your application is sent via email to the company's recruiting team.

Some jobs also include screening questions that you answer before submitting. These are set by the employer to help filter candidates.

Important: When you apply through Himalayas, your application goes directly to the company. Himalayas does not review, filter, or make decisions on applications. See What is Himalayas for more on how the platform works.

How do I track my job applications?

Himalayas includes a free Job Application Tracker where you can:

  • Keep a record of every job you have applied to
  • Track the status of each application (applied, interviewing, offer, rejected, etc.)
  • Add notes to each application
  • See all your applications in one place

The tracker is completely free and available to all users, including those on the free tier.

How do job alerts work?

Himalayas sends you email notifications when new jobs matching your preferences are posted.

  • Free accounts receive weekly job alert emails
  • Plus and Max subscribers receive daily job alert emails

Job alerts are based on your profile preferences (desired roles, seniority, skills, location, and salary expectations). The more complete your preferences are, the more relevant your alerts will be.

You can manage your alert frequency and preferences from Settings > Emails. You can also unsubscribe from alerts at any time using the link at the bottom of any alert email.

How do I make myself visible to employers?

If your profile is set to public, it appears in the Talent Directory — a searchable database of 200,000+ job seekers that employers can browse. Employers search by skills, location, timezone, and seniority to find candidates that match their open roles.

To maximize your visibility:

  1. Complete every section of your profile: Name, bio, experience, education, tech stack, and preferences
  2. Add all your skills: Employers search by specific skills, so the more you list, the more searches you appear in
  3. Set your timezone: Many employers filter by timezone for collaboration
  4. Keep your profile up to date: Update it when you learn new skills or change roles
  5. Set your profile to public: Go to Settings > Privacy and make sure your profile is visible

If you prefer not to be found by employers but still want to apply to jobs, you can keep your profile private. See Account and Privacy for details.
