The Himalayas AI Resume Builder generates ATS-optimized resumes tailored to specific job descriptions. You can start from your Himalayas profile, upload an existing resume, or build from scratch. Choose from three professional templates, customize colors and fonts, and export as PDF. One free resume is included; unlimited with Himalayas Plus ($9/month).
How does the AI Resume Builder work?
The resume builder uses AI to create a resume optimized for both human readers and Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). ATS is the software most companies use to filter applications before a recruiter ever sees them — if your resume is not formatted for ATS, it can get filtered out before a recruiter sees it.
You provide your information and optionally a job description, and the AI generates a resume that highlights the most relevant skills, uses proper formatting and keywords, and follows a clean structure that ATS software can parse correctly.
What are the three ways to create a resume?
1. Start from your profile
Best if you have already completed your Himalayas profile.
- Choose "Start from profile"
- Your work experience, education, skills, and bio are automatically pulled from your Himalayas profile
- Optionally paste a job link or description to tailor the resume to a specific role (job description must be at least 100 characters)
- Give your resume a title (e.g., "Senior Engineer — Stripe")
- The AI generates a tailored resume using your profile data and the job context
2. Upload an existing resume
Best if you already have a resume and want to improve or tailor it.
- Choose "Upload resume"
- Upload your existing resume file (PDF or DOC format)
- Himalayas parses the content from your uploaded file
- Optionally provide a job link or description to tailor it
- Give your resume a title
- The AI enhances and restructures your existing resume content
3. Build from scratch
Best if you want full control over every section.
- Choose "Create new resume"
- Give your resume a title
- You get a blank resume editor where you fill in every section manually
All three methods produce a resume you can edit, customize, and export.
What can I customize on my resume?
The resume editor gives you full control over your resume content and appearance.
Content sections
- Personal details: Name, email, phone number, and Himalayas profile link
- Location: Your city and country
- Professional summary: An introductory paragraph summarizing your experience and goals
- Work experience: Multiple positions, each with title, company, location, employment type, dates, and a detailed description of your responsibilities and accomplishments
- Education: Multiple entries with degree, school, dates, and optional descriptions
- Skills: A list of your technical and professional skills
Design options
- Template: Choose from three professional layouts:
- Harvard: Traditional, conservative design. Best for corporate and finance roles.
- Modern: Contemporary layout with visual design elements. Good for tech and creative roles.
- Simple: Minimal, clean formatting. Versatile and universally appropriate.
- Font: Select from available font families
- Color: Customize the accent color using a color picker to match your personal brand or keep it neutral
How does ATS optimization work?
Applicant Tracking Systems scan resumes for specific keywords, formatting patterns, and structural elements. The Himalayas AI Resume Builder optimizes for ATS in several ways:
- Keyword alignment: When you provide a job description, the AI identifies the key skills, qualifications, and terms the employer is looking for and incorporates them naturally into your resume
- Clean formatting: The templates use standard headings, consistent structure, and proper hierarchy that ATS software can parse without errors
- No ATS-breaking elements: The generated PDFs avoid graphics-heavy layouts, tables-within-tables, headers/footers with critical information, and other elements that commonly cause ATS parsing failures
- Action verbs: The AI uses strong, specific action verbs to describe accomplishments rather than passive language
After generating your resume, you receive feedback explaining why certain choices were made and suggestions for further improvements.
How do I tailor a resume to a specific job?
When creating a resume (from profile or upload), you have the option to tailor it to a specific job:
- During creation, select "Tailor to job"
- Provide either:
- A direct job URL — Himalayas automatically extracts the job title, company, and description
- A pasted job description — Copy and paste the full job description (minimum 100 characters)
- The AI analyzes the job requirements and adjusts your resume to emphasize relevant experience, skills, and keywords
Tailoring your resume for each application significantly improves your chances of passing ATS filters and getting noticed by recruiters. This is one of the primary benefits of Himalayas Plus — the ability to generate unlimited tailored resumes rather than sending the same generic resume to every employer.
Does the resume auto-save?
Yes. The resume editor auto-saves your work as you type. There is a saving indicator in the editor that shows when your changes are being saved. You never need to manually save — just edit and your changes are preserved automatically.
Auto-save triggers after you stop typing for about 10 seconds, or after 90 seconds of continuous editing, whichever comes first.
How do I export my resume?
Click the download button in the resume editor to export your resume as a PDF file. The PDF is generated using the template and customization options you have selected.
The file is named automatically based on your name (e.g., Jane-Smith-resume.pdf).
Browser compatibility note: PDF generation happens in your browser. If you experience issues with the download, try using Chrome or Safari. If problems persist, email hi@himalayas.app and the team can help troubleshoot.
Can I edit my resume after creating it?
Yes. You can return to any resume you have created and edit it at any time from your Resumes dashboard. Changes auto-save as you work.
You can also change the template, font, or color of an existing resume without recreating it.
How many resumes can I create?
| Plan | Resumes |
|---|---|
| Free | 1 resume |
| Plus ($9/mo) | Unlimited |
| Max ($29/mo) | Unlimited |
On the free tier, you get one AI-generated resume. This is ideal for trying out the feature. With Himalayas Plus, you can create unlimited resumes — one tailored for each job you apply to.
Note: Deleting a resume does not restore your free credit. If you used your free resume and want to create more, you will need a Plus subscription.
What if I used my free resume on an expired job?
This happens occasionally — you tailor your one free resume to a job that turns out to be expired or no longer accepting applications.
If this happens, email hi@himalayas.app and explain the situation. The team can reset your free resume credit so you can generate another one.
To reduce the risk of tailoring to expired jobs, check the posting date on the job listing before generating your resume. Jobs posted more than 3–4 weeks ago are more likely to have already been filled.
Can I use the AI chat assistant while editing?
Yes. The resume editor includes an AI chat assistant that you can use while editing your resume. You can ask it for help with specific sections - for example, "rewrite my summary to emphasize leadership experience" or "suggest bullet points for my role at Shopify." The assistant has context about your resume and can make targeted suggestions.
Tips for creating the best resume
Do provide a job description when tailoring. The more context the AI has about the specific role, the better it can customize your resume. A full job description works better than just a job title.
Do review and edit the AI output. The AI generates a strong starting point, but your own knowledge of your experience matters. Review each section, correct any inaccuracies, and add personal touches that the AI cannot know.
Do quantify your accomplishments. Instead of "managed a team," write "managed a team of 8 engineers and delivered 3 major product releases." Numbers stand out to both ATS and human readers.
Do use the right template for the role. Harvard for traditional industries (finance, law, consulting), Modern for tech and startups, Simple when you want maximum readability.
Don't include everything. A good resume is targeted. Focus on the experience and skills most relevant to the specific job you are applying for. With Himalayas Plus, you can create a different resume for each application.
