General:

A Tax and Accounting Manager is responsible for all facets of an engagement and has the ability to manage numerous engagements at one time. The manager should be able to complete an engagement through the Block 4 technical review. This includes coordinating the interaction of the client and the engagement team, overseeing the engagement planning, fieldwork (if any), and the completion of the engagement. Additionally, a manager is involved in certain administrative and practice development functions within the firm and/or department.
The expectation for a new staff joining the firm out of college would be that they progress to senior manager after nine years of experience. Therefore, the expectations for a manager would be that they progress to senior manager after three years. As with all expectations, it is possible for managers to progress at a different pace.
The application of the following performance expectations may vary greatly during as an employee progresses as a manager. For example, a new manager might be expected to run a basic engagement with no unusual issues with active participation of a partner while an experienced manager would be expected to run multiple engagements with far less partner supervision. To take the example further, an experienced senior manager would be expected to run multiple complex engagements with minimal partner supervision.
Professional performance expectations are very similar and may stay constant between levels, but what changes is how they are applied, or the complexity of the engagements or the problems being solved.
