TechnoServe's story began in 1968, born from the vision of businessman and philanthropist Ed Bullard. His experiences volunteering in a hospital in rural Ghana ignited a profound realization: hardworking individuals, given the right tools and opportunities, could harness the power of private enterprise to lift themselves and their communities out of poverty. This wasn't about handouts; it was about providing a 'hand up.' With this conviction, Bullard launched TechnoServe, a name thoughtfully derived from 'technology in the service of mankind.' The core idea was to connect people in developing nations with crucial information and market opportunities, empowering them to build sustainable futures.

The organization's first tangible project took root in 1969 in Honduras, where TechnoServe facilitated the construction of a feed mill for poultry and egg production. This early endeavor wasn't just about building infrastructure; it involved securing capital and bringing in experienced operational leadership to ensure the project's long-term viability and growth. By 1971, TechnoServe's footprint had expanded, with initiatives taking shape in several other countries across Latin America, the Caribbean, and Africa. These initial efforts laid the groundwork for what would evolve into comprehensive, impactful projects spanning the globe over the subsequent decades. Today, TechnoServe operates in nearly 30 countries, continuing its mission to foster prosperity by providing business solutions to poverty, linking people to information, capital, and markets, and transforming millions of lives by enabling them to build competitive farms, businesses, and industries.
