Teaching Lab is a nonprofit organization with a mission to fundamentally shift the paradigm of teacher professional learning. In partnership with teachers, we transform professional learning from the ground up to dramatically improve student outcomes. We also work with school, district, and state leaders to create the instructional systems necessary to support these changes.
We are seeking highly organized, motivated, and detail-oriented consultants with experience reviewing the copyright of resources that we are interested in using in our professional learning products to ensure these third party resources are used in compliance with copyright laws and best practices. If required, this role would also be responsible for securing permission for use or suggesting alternatives based on project budget.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teaching Lab creates professional learning content and resources to support educators to implement high-quality curriculum materials and culturally-responsive and sustaining educational practices, and we reference many research, frameworks, and resources. Permission to use these materials may depend on their copyright, how Teaching Lab might use them, estimated reach and use, and the expiration timeline for the permission. Depending on a material’s usage and copyright, Teaching Lab may need to secure permission to use copyrighted materials.
  • The Copyright Permissions Consultant will support the organization by identifying when permissions are needed, determining the appropriate use, and—when necessary—securing those permissions for use in Teaching Lab content.

  • The key responsibilities of a Copyright Permissions Consultant include the following:
  • Work closely with various departments to understand project requirements
  • Collaborate with project teams to understand content usage needs and project timelines
  • Review published materials that have been identified as needing permissions
  • Review Teaching Lab-created professional development content and identify materials that might need permissions
  • Research and recommend free, high-quality alternatives when copyrighted materials require paid licenses or permissions that exceed Teaching Lab’s usage parameters
  • If permissions are required: (1) Research to determine who owns the copyright over the material, (2) Determine what information is required for the owner/entity to grant Teaching Lab permission to use the content as specified, (3) Contact the owner/entity to request and secure permission and create a contract for use if necessary, (4) Research free alternatives that better fit budget parameters should securing of rights falls outside budget parameters, and (5) Keep Teaching Lab project team members updated on the progress of permission request
  • Update Teaching Lab’s Permissions Database to include new permissions for use

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience reviewing and identifying copyright permissions
  • Experience obtaining copyright permissions
  • Strong research, writing, and communication skills
  • Highly organized with strong attention to details
  • Strong time management skills
  • High proficiency with Google Suite and Microsoft products: Word/ Google Doc, Excel/ Google Sheet, PowerPoint/ Google Slides
  • Self-directed, responsive, and reliable
  • Experience clearly documenting permissions status and usage information in shared databases or tracking tools (e.g., project-specific logs or spreadsheetss) for team visibility
  • Experience working in a remote environment
  • Experience working in a fast-paced work environment
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a remote environment

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with K-12 education context

ABOUT CONTRACTING ROLES

  • A 1099 Contractor is not eligible for Teaching Lab’s benefits and perks
  • Copyright Permissions Consultants are scheduled on a “by project” basis and are generally notified up to one week before the project begins. The number of service hours and the specific hours are dependent on projects we have and when you are available.
  • When contacted for services, consultants have two business days to accept the project.
  • We strive to ensure that quality talent is selected and performs work for Teaching Lab. Due to the nature of the services provided by Teaching Lab, we engage in environments that potentially put our 1099 Contractors in close proximity to children and youth under the age of eighteen (18). Therefore, in an effort to protect the children and youth, our partners, and employees, Teaching Lab conducts background checks as part of the selection and hiring process. This includes reference checks, and verifications/checks for a social security number, education, employment, criminal records search (national and county), global watch list, and sex offender status. Additionally, depending on a specific partnership/contract requirement, the criminal background check process could include fingerprinting. Reference checks are completed by Teaching Lab’s People & Culture team. Other background checks are conducted by our third party vendor Checkr and/or the State specific criminal background check provider.
