Job Description

As a Design Director at Square, you will oversee design on our Payments Platform team. You will manage your team's career development and uphold Square's high bar for quality. You and your team will design modular, end-to-end onboarding and Payments experiences – in the form of APIs and SDKs – which teams within the company and Sellers outside the company will use as building blocks to create remarkable products. You will drive our core product's design and empower small- and medium-sized businesses and the people behind them. 

You will report directly to the Head of Design for Financial Services, and partner with your cross-functional peers to inform the roadmap, and drive increased cohesion of the respective pieces. You will lead a team of 3+ product designers. You will provide guidance of their output, facilitating cross-functional partnerships and the design process. You will promote an outstanding design practice, influence product strategy, and ensure product execution. As a Design Director, you'll provide mentorship and champion the craft and career development of your team, while creating a safe haven so designers can accomplish their best work.

Qualifications


You have:

  • 12+ years of relevant design experience in digital product, 4+ years in people management
  • Experience managing product designers and marketing designers, and the ability to build, mentor, and motivate teams
  • A diverse portfolio of work personally designed and shipped, along with examples of work directed and delivered by your team
  • Experience synthesizing company-level goals to help teams across multiple products create remarkable design experiences

Even better:

  • Led a team of 3+ creatives, providing direction, pushing the quality of the work, and inspiring a strong design culture
  • Influence the overarching strategy for Payments Platform, in collaboration with engineering and product management leadership
  • Build relationships with cross-functional team members from Engineering, Product, Marketing, and Data Science and speak to product strategy, design goals, and execution
  • Participate in design discipline-wide conversations and create deliverables on how to improve process, operations, and tools
