Medical Assisting - Medical Office Administration Adjunct Description
South College is seeking a qualified Remote Certified Billing and Coding Instructor to join our Associate of Science in Medical Office Administration team! This role involves teaching online asynchronous courses (Healthcare Office Management, Records Management, Medical Ethics and Governance, Healthcare Insurance and Medical Coding). These specific Medical Office Administration courses will be fully remote. The ideal candidate will be innovative and utilize diverse instructional methods to effectively engage students with different learning styles.
Responsibilites
- Effectively conducting online lectures, laboratory sessions, and/or clinical courses as required.
- Be available to hold office hours and dedicate time to meet students' needs and questions, ensuring prompt and efficient responses.
- Assisting in implementing College policies, objectives, and functions in accordance with South College’s philosophy.
- Capable of providing engaging weekly recorded lectures for students, ensuring that content is accessible and aligned with course objectives.
- Keeping students informed of their progress by promptly grading assignments, projects, skill assessments, competency evaluations, and other tasks.
- Facilitating student connections with relevant campus and community resources.
- Aiding and supporting the program director with student retention and reports.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in a healthcare-related field preferred
Licensure
- CPC® – Certified Professional Coder (AAPC), CCS (AHIMA), or equivalent
Experience
- 2–3 years of recent, relevant experience in medical billing, coding, or medical office management
- An understanding of educational theory and techniques.
- Experience as a MOA and/or working as a front office/clinical manager.
- Demonstrated proficiency in utilizing technology for instructional purposes.
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
- Dedication to fostering student achievement and creating an inclusive learning environment.
- Preference will be given to those with a proven record of excellence in teaching at the postsecondary or higher education level
- Candidates should have either foundational or advanced knowledge in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, medical assisting/nursing, phlebotomy skills, pharmacology, diseases of the body, office administration, and medical law and ethics.
- Experience with LMS platforms (Canvas, Blackboard, D2L, etc.).
Required Knowledge Areas
- ICD-10-CM: Diagnosis coding for all healthcare settings
- CPT (Current Procedural Terminology): Procedure coding, primarily used in outpatient and physician-based services
- HCPCS Level II: Coding for supplies, medications, and non-physician services such as ambulance transport
- Insurance & Reimbursement: Familiarity with Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payer systems
- Compliance & Regulations: Understanding of HIPAA, fraud and abuse laws, and medical documentation standards
- Outpatient and physician-based coding using CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS
- Inpatient coding concepts (as needed for comprehensive instruction)
- Medical billing processes, insurance claims management, and reimbursement procedures
- Ensuring regulatory compliance in billing and coding practices
