Sony Electronics Inc. (“SEL”), which markets and sells consumer and professional products and services in the US and Canada, has an excellent opportunity for an experienced privacy attorney to join our team as a full-time employee for a fixed one (1) year term. Reporting into the Sony Electronics Legal Department as a member of the Privacy Team, this role will primarily focus on providing privacy guidance and support in connection with global projects and initiatives, providing expertise and guidance in connection with relevant law in the US and Canada. It will involve working directly with Sony’s global privacy team members, Sony Electronics legal and business teams, and coordination with other Sony affiliate legal, privacy and business groups. A successful candidate must be able to work independently, to build systems and processes, and to collaborate with legal, privacy, and information security colleagues around the world.

Responsibilities:

Provide privacy legal advice in support of local or global and cross-company business projects and initiatives. This includes:

  • Counseling clients on privacy compliance (including digital and other marketing and advertising activities)

  • Advising on customer and business-to-business privacy issues

  • Monitoring privacy law developments (primarily for the US and Canada) and providing recommendations on best practices, trends and legal requirements

  • Implementing and ensuring ongoing compliance with major privacy laws such as CAN-SPAM, CASL, VPPA, COPPA, HIPAA and other health-related privacy laws, biometrics laws and comprehensive state privacy laws such as the California Consumer Privacy Act

  • Conducting Privacy Risk and Privacy Impact Assessments

  • Negotiating Data Processing and Data Transfer Agreements

  • Providing advice regarding privacy considerations and user interfaces (including consent and disclosure requirements) to be built into new products, apps, and services (“Privacy by Design”)

  • Drafting privacy notices and policies for websites, e-commerce sites, online marketplaces, products, apps and services

  • Providing input on proposed global information security standards, policies, tools and other requirements

  • Assisting with the processing of Data Subject Requests involving data collected outside the US and Canada

  • Evaluating notification requirements and assisting with data breach response as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A J.D. degree and membership in good standing in in at least one State Bar, with the ability to be licensed to practice law as an in-house attorney in California

  • Minimum of 7 years of related privacy legal experience in a top law firm or corporate environment

  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of US privacy law

  • Solid understanding of technology (ideally in the context of electronics), the digital marketing ecosystem and cookie governance

  • A high level of strategic thinking to solve complex matters and advance the business

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Excellent judgment and analytical skills

  • Ability to assess risk strategically and help clients find solutions that enable them to mitigate and manage risk while achieving their goals

  • Program/project management skills, including the ability to handle and prioritize multiple projects

  • The strong leadership and interpersonal skills necessary to build relationships and at times manage project teams across the Sony Group

  • Available for occasional domestic and international travel, as necessary

Preferred Qualifications:

  • In-house experience in a multinational corporation, coordinating with colleagues and professionals outside of the US and Canada

  • In-depth knowledge, familiarity, and/or experience with Canadian privacy law preferred

  • Experience with OneTrust and Archer systems preferred

  • Excellent computer skills

The anticipated base pay range for this position is $168,000 to $185,000. The actual base salary offered depends on a variety of factors, which may include as applicable, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, specific and unique skills, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job.

In addition to a competitive base salary this position is also eligible for a limited benefits package including healthcare benefits (medical, dental, and vision), vacation time, and eighty hours of paid sick leave time annually.
