Opportunity & Background

SecondMuse Capital’s Future Economy Lab (“FEL”) is a global collaborative research & design approach that innovates how we finance the development of new economies, developing investment products for high positive impact. Through the lab, SecondMuse Capital and Grantmakers for Girls of Color (G4GC) have partnered to foster abundant investment in the present and futures of girls and gender expansive youth of Color (ages 13-24). Over the past two years, we have been working with girls and gender expansive youth of Color and their communities to understand where they see the most opportunities for impact. A first investment product designed in the lab is an early stage venture capital fund to invest in a number of sectors, in line with outcomes articulated throughout the lab by youth (see this one-pager for more details), and where we are looking for a fund managing director to lead this work. This is intended to be the first of a franchise of funds aimed at advancing the goals articulated through the lab. Ultimately, our goal is to foster more opportunities for girls and gender expansive youth of Color to increase their engagement in economic communities and also be seen, heard, lead, and supported through various initiatives

Role

As the Fund Managing Director you will join SecondMuse Capital's investment team overseen by the Global Head of Investments, and with this fund you’ll have the unique opportunity to shape the future of investment in diverse communities. You’ll be at the helm of this fund aimed at investing in transformative ventures, driving change and fostering innovation in economies of the future. You will also be a key person of the Fund.

Fund

Seed stage venture capital fund focused on ventures serving and/or led by youth of Color serving the goals to create an abundant future for girls and gender expansive youth of Color in the United States. This is expected to be Fund I in a franchise of funds.

Job Description

The Partner of the Fund provides overall leadership and is responsible for execution and implementation of the Fund, stewardship of investment capital, and with accountability directly to the Board of Directors of the Fund, composed of members representing SecondMuse Capital and G4GC.

We have spent the last two years deeply understanding how they envision abundant investment in their communities. In their own words they told us that an abundant future is one where they are “consistently thriving in a tranquil world, surrounded by a sustainable society built on communal love reimagined, that is inclusive of all of us and our cultures.”

In this role, you’ll not only leverage your skills and experience in venture capital and private equity, but you’ll also grow as a leader, strategist, and advocate for diversity and inclusion in the investment landscape. You’ll be part of a small team of ambitious professionals dedicated to building SecondMuse Capital’s direct investment practice. From refining our overall Fund investment thesis and strategy to proactive sourcing and deal origination, you’ll face exciting challenges that will test your skills and push your boundaries. Although we are open to candidates from all over the United States, candidates from the U.S. South are especially encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborating with the SecondMuse Capital and G4GC leadership teams to refine the overall Fund investment thesis and strategy, ensuring integration of ESG and impact policies in line with Future Economy Lab’s overall goals
  • Fundraising for the Fund, with support from SecondMuse Capital and G4GC teams
  • Recruiting and hiring the future Fund team and supervising analysts and other support staff for the Fund
  • Proactively sourcing deals, conducting market studies, financial modeling, and valuation of investment opportunities
  • Assisting in all aspects of deal execution, including conducting market and financial due diligence, structuring and contract negotiation, and managing the process from origination to exit
  • Monitoring of portfolio companies and executing value creation plan
  • Representing the Fund on the board of directors or supervisory board of portfolio companies
  • Stewarding governing bodies of the Fund (IC, Advisory, LPAC, etc.) and managing investor relations
  • Providing leadership to develop Fund II, III, and future strategy
  • Aligning with ecosystem partners to support fund strategy and operations
  • Supporting innovative finance and design work, including participation in the Future Economy Lab post-development work in the field.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of work experience in venture capital, private equity,and/or angel investing preferably with solid financial modeling and valuation expertise
  • Experience with fundraising for a pooled investment vehicle
  • Experience in technology innovation and industry experience in at least one of the following: creative industries, healthcare and mental health, education and/or sustainability & circular economy
  • Experience working with and building pipelines of talent within diverse communities
  • Master's degree education, or equivalent certifications or professional experience, in relevant field will be an asset
  • Well-organized, detail-oriented, ability to multitask and work under tight deadlines
  • Strong business, management and investment acumen
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Travel across the country will be required for fundraising, deal flow, etc.
  • If offered the role, the candidate must submit to a background check
