As the decades went by, software became more common. It became a larger part of our lives and an important part of how the world operates.

Today software is everywhere, but it’s become increasingly rare to encounter truly great software. Computers are faster but apps work slower. Corners are cut with each release. Product decisions are driven by A/B tests.

We’ve lost the magic along the way. And the result is software that’s frustrating and boring to use.

We want to bring that magic back.

Linear was born out of our own frustrations in building software projects in successful high-growth companies. We saw the effects of subpar tools and practices in our teams, so we decided to build something better.

We chose the name Linear to signify progress.

The company was founded 2019, and today, hundreds of high-impact teams and companies are already using Linear daily to build next generation software.

We’re building Linear to be a fully distributed company. Today our team is located in California, New York and Finland. We believe in the importance of having able to choose where you live without having to make trade-offs between work and being close to your family, community or interests.

We believe that the freedom to work remotely reduces distractions and allows for deeper and more meaningful work. That’s why Linear will support and even help create the workflows and tools of this new way of working.
