Its founders, Anna-Katrina Shedletsky and Samuel Weiss, while working as product design engineers at Apple, experienced firsthand the pervasive inefficiencies and waste that plagued the electronics industry. This intimate understanding of what they term the 'trillion-dollar problem' in manufacturing – where an estimated twenty cents of every dollar spent is lost to inefficiency – became the crucible for their innovative idea.

Driven by this experience, they embarked on a mission in 2014 to create a solution, officially founding Instrumental in 2015.
