Hudbay (TSX, NYSE: HBM) is a copper-focused mining company with three long-life operations and a world-class pipeline of copper growth projects in tier-one mining-friendly jurisdictions of Canada, Peru and the United States. Hudbay’s operating portfolio includes the Constancia mine in Cusco (Peru), the Snow Lake operations in Manitoba (Canada) and the Copper Mountain mine in British Columbia (Canada). Copper is the primary metal produced by the company, which is complemented by meaningful gold production. Hudbay’s growth pipeline includes the Copper World project in Arizona, the Mason project in Nevada (United States), the Llaguen project in La Libertad (Peru) and several expansion and exploration opportunities near its existing operations.
Purpose of Role:
The purpose of this role is to identify, evaluate, and execute growth opportunities that are consistent with the company’s strategy.
Role Accountabilities:
1. Contribute to setting the company’s corporate strategy and acquisitions, including:
- Geographies, geologies, metal mix, stage of development, etc. and assist in communicating this strategy both internally and externally
- Assist in identifying, monitoring, and evaluating target assets and companies for acquisition
- Co-ordinate the transaction analysis process
- Participate in technical and financial due diligence and site visits for operating and development acquisition opportunities
2. Financial Modeling Deliverables:
- Provide oversight and is accountable for the accuracy, quality, and timeliness of financial modeling deliverables for senior management review
- Prepare financial analysis/modeling and coordinate the completion of work with the Manager, Corporate Development
3. Accountable for the accuracy, quality, and timeliness of various deliverables for senior management and the Board, including:
- Economic and financial analyses of acquisition opportunities
- Market updates and quarterly performance/opportunity update materials
- Makes a significant individual contribution to Board materials and participates/presents as needed at Board meetings
- Delivery of investment recommendation memorandums, presentations, and materials for corporate development investment/transaction approvals
4. Relationship Management:
- Work closely with internal (technical services, legal, finance, tax, investor relations) and external parties (investment bankers, consultants, investors) on various aspects of the corporate development evaluation and transaction process
- Develop new relationships with external parties, including mining companies and investment bankers, to facilitate new transaction opportunities
5. Assist in managing an equity portfolio of junior mining investments, evaluating the suitability of existing investments and sourcing potential new investments
6. Assist in raising debt and equity capital and finding alternative sources of capital, including streaming transactions and private placements with strategic shareholders
7. Monitor the maintenance and accuracy of corporate development databases
8. Special projects as needed
Experience and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in business, engineering, science, or a related discipline
- 8+ years in investment banking, corporate development, equity research or related roles
- Solid understanding of the mining industry
- Relevant transaction experience
- CFA designation or MBA would be an asset
Knowledge and Skills:
- Detailed understanding of the mining industry, particularly in copper and base metals
- Ability to interface effectively with senior members of Hudbay (technical services, exploration, legal, finance) as well as external parties (investment bankers, consultants, etc.)
- Financial modeling skills and ability to provide oversight and feedback to the Manager on economic and financial analysis
- Strong research skills
- Excellent critical thinking and analytical skills, with a demonstrated track record of sound business judgment in decisions with an abstract outcome
- Relationship oriented with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to expand current network
- Results oriented, extremely proactive and a highly responsive individual with excellent written and communication skills
- Ability to prioritize, manage several projects at once and work under a high pressure, deadline driven environment while overseeing the output of the Manager
- Strategic thinking and negotiating skills with ability to reflect on relevant transaction experience to achieve the desired outcome
Travel:
10% to 15% travel – site visits and conference/roadshow attendance, as needed.
Working Arrangements:
Role is eligible flexible work arrangements, allowing you to balance 50% of your time in the office with 50% time working remotely.
