UI Designer, Concentric by Ginkgo

Ginkgo Bioworks

Job description

We’re looking for a highly talented UI Designer to join our team and help build our COVID-19 testing service, Concentric by Ginkgo. In recent months, we've been inspired and heartened by the tremendous public health response to COVID-19, and recognize that a similar scale of effort is needed by the biotech community to find long-term solutions to this crisis. In particular, testing is essential in order to resume our daily rhythms:  communities need testing to reunite their people and culture. Businesses need testing to reopen their offices and provide confidence to their teams and stakeholders. And schools need testing to be able to reconvene their campuses and research communities.

To respond to this acute and widespread need for COVID-19 testing, Ginkgo has developed a SARS-CoV-2 screening service - Concentric by Ginkgo - that is designed to provide broader access to COVID-19 diagnostic testing solutions. We’re building increased Foundry capacity to support high rates of testing frequency for our clients, offering an end-to-end, onsite testing service designed to test large communities of individuals. Performed at high-scale and high-throughput, this additional testing capacity will be essential for organizations, institutions, and companies to be able reopen their communities.

About the project:

A critical component of Concentric by Ginkgo’s testing service is its digital portal, which is continuously improved by our UI Designers in order to best support our customers through their testing processes. Specifically, this portal enables test takers to sign up, manage tests, and view their results; clients to organize testing and view aggregated results; and onsite test supervisors to run sample collection events.

As a UI Designer for Concentric by Ginkgo, your expertise in mobile and web application design will help to create a digital product that seamlessly integrates with the overall test service. Your understanding of interaction design will be crucial in providing our different user types with the information they need, when they need it, and ensuring  that test results are delivered with care, confidence, and dignity. Working within a fast-growing team - on a product that will reach a high number of users - your role as a UI Designer will be key to the success of this important initiative.

Please note: this is a remote position for a fixed-term contract, which we are looking to fill immediately.  We are seeking candidates who are authorized to work in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Design intuitive user interfaces and visuals for responsive web and mobile platforms
  • Collaborate with service/physical/digital designers, researchers, engineers and product managers to ensure that we’re solving the right problem, the right way
  • Work within our UI Kit and brand style guide to deliver high quality, polished user interface designs, assets and specs
  • Coordinate and partner with engineering to handoff designs, provide specifications and QA support through to launch

Desired Experience and Capabilities

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience and 4+ years of experience in a related field
  • Interface and interaction design experience in Agile design environments
  • Ability to work within a fast-paced and collaborative environment and handle multiple projects with tight deadlines
  • Prior experience in ensuring efficiency and clarity in the front end development handoff process
  • Demonstrated understanding and ability to translate content into user scenarios, flows and diagrams
  • Expert knowledge in Figma and practical experience in other tools such as Jira, Sketch, InVision
  • Experience using methodologies such as Lean UX and Design Thinking
  • Ability to share an online portfolio or samples of work demonstrating creative design solutions, interaction design, and prototypes
