Job Description

The Role

This is an exciting opportunity for an entrepreneurial natural resource economist to join a fast-growing wood products team in developing a new hardwood lumber forecast practice area. The role will require partnering with the Senior Economist Softwood Lumber and the Team Lead, Wood Products to develop and deliver recurring market reports and publications, help in the development of projects or studies focusing on pertinent market analysis and outlooks on important North American hardwood subjects and markets (both single and multi-client in nature). The role will also be responsible for supporting the sales and marketing teams in the production of adequate marketing materials, sales training and sales discussions with clients to further their ability in selling Fastmarket's North American Wood Products offerings and to support expanding sales for the new Hardwood practice.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Lead the development and the production of new Wood Product’s forecasts and analysis for hardwood lumber markets, developing the ability to assume full responsibility for their completion within the first year.
  • Assist in the development of North American hardwood lumber special project and consulting business, to include assisting in or leading the performance of the analysis as well as to actively seek out, bid on and capture new consulting business
  • Assist in the development of North American wood products special project and consulting business, to include assisting in or leading the performance of the analysis as well as to actively seek out, bid on and capture new consulting business.
  • Cultivate, maintain, and develop new strong business relationships with customers who have a business interest in North American wood products and hardwood lumber markets
  • Support customers as well as the sales and marketing teams to help deliver the full value of our products and analysis
  • Speaking/presenting at Fastmarkets and other industry conferences as well as on site client presentations.
  • Pursue presentation opportunities directly with trade organizations to increase Fastmarket’s profile in the industry
  • Develop and maintenance of strong network of North American wood products contacts and information/data sources

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

We are looking for an individual who is highly motivated, driven, and have a passion to be part of a fast-paced, successful team. Being a strong team player is also important as well as someone who is happy to work flexibly.

  • MA/MS in Business, Economics, or related field
  • Strong analytical/mathematical/econometric modelling/statistical skills
  • Strong presenting, writing, speaking, and overall communications skills.
  • Ability to work well as part of or as the lead of a cross functional team as well as the ability to work effectively and efficiently in an independent setting.
  • Demonstrated time-management and organizational skills
  • 2-3 years’ experience in the forest products industry or related field preferred.
  • Proficient in English, oral and written
  • Proficient in Excel, Eviews, Word and PowerPoint
  • Comfortable working in a team environment on multiple tasks with evolving priorities
  • Desire to apply economics in the business world
