We are Element, the company behind the popular secure messaging and collaboration app of the same name. Our core mission is to empower individuals and organizations with control over their communications, championing data sovereignty and privacy in an increasingly centralized digital world. We believe that private conversations are a fundamental human right, and we're passionate about building an open web for communication where anyone can talk to anyone, securely and without compromise. We are the creators and primary developers of Matrix, an open, decentralized standard for real-time communication. This means that unlike traditional messaging platforms, Element users aren't locked into a single provider. They have the freedom to choose where their data is hosted – whether it's on their own servers, through our managed hosting services, or via the public Matrix network. This commitment to decentralization and open standards is at the heart of everything we do.

Our journey began in 2017, driven by the vision of Matthew Hodgson and Amandine Le Pape, who were frustrated by the fragmented landscape of siloed communication tools. They set out to create a truly interoperable and secure alternative. Today, Element serves a diverse range of users, from individuals and communities to large enterprises and government organizations worldwide who require the highest levels of security and data control. We provide a feature-rich platform that includes end-to-end encryption by default for all private chats and calls, ensuring that only the intended recipients can access the information. Our offerings include the Element app, available across all major platforms (web, iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, and Linux), and the Element Server Suite (ESS) for organizations looking for enterprise-grade, self-hosted or fully managed deployments. We are constantly innovating, pushing the boundaries of secure communication with features like Element Call for native, end-to-end encrypted voice and video conferencing, and robust integrations to bridge communication across different platforms. We're proud to be an open-source company, with the vast majority of our code available on GitHub, fostering a vibrant community of developers and users who contribute to the Matrix ecosystem.
