Shape a technology from the beginning.

Imagine, for a moment, having to look up and manually enter an IP address anytime you wanted to visit a website. The internet today would be very clunky and difficult for people to use! Luckily, back in 1983, a graduate student at UC Irvine named Paul Mockapetris envisioned, designed, and built the Domain Name System. DNS is what we use today to translate human-friendly website names into computer-friendly IP addresses. Paul was able to single-handedly shape the future of the internet by solving a very large usability problem in a very young technology.

The world of blockchain and cryptocurrencies is currently in the very early stages, similar to the internet before Paul got his hands on it. We have the rare opportunity to significantly shape the future of this new technology, making it easy for humans to use, and opening the door to true disruption on a global scale. BRD is all about bringing cryptocurrencies to the masses, and fully realizing the potential of what we see as the greatest invention since the internet.

Just as how the internet wasn’t built in a day, nurturing this industry to reach its full potential will be neither quick nor easy. We are not a fail-fast, flash-in-the-pan startup looking for a quick exit. We believe in the long-term, world-changing potential of crypto. With over one million downloads, users in almost every country in the world, and a conservative fiscal approach that values our employees above all else, we are going to be there every step of the way to make sure it’s done right.

We are as diverse as our users.

Our app is used in over 170 countries, and in order to meet the needs of a global and diverse user base, we’re building a team to match. We have offices in San Francisco, Chicago, and Bend, Oregon, but much of our team is remote and hails from all corners of the globe. We speak English, Spanish, Mandarin, Japanese, German, Russian, and Tagalog. We actively recruit across locations, backgrounds, experiences, orientations, and educations, allowing us to deliver a truly world-class experience to our customers around the world.

We hire some crypto experts, but mostly not.

We have some extremely talented blockchain experts on our team, but many of us had little-to-no experience in cryptocurrencies before coming on board. Being newcomers to the space means we get to look at this new technology with fresh eyes, and imagine possibilities or solutions that others might miss. Don’t be fooled though, our crypto experts have no problem explaining the ins and outs of how all this works to anyone who might be curious (and sometimes to those who aren’t). The point is, you don’t need to be an expert in crypto or blockchain technologies to join the team, so long as you can bring the goods in terms of native mobile development, web technologies, design, marketing, product management, or anything else listed to the left.

Technical nitty-gritty, for those who are interested.

BRD is a “light” client, which connects directly to cryptocurrency networks. The core of this technology is one of the few pieces that does involve cryptography and low-level networking. It’s written in C, with JNI bindings for Android. Higher levels get a simplified and “safe” interface for reading, creating, and manipulating transactions.

This core library is used by native apps for iOS (Swift) and Android (Java). The native side is responsible for presenting the user with transaction lists and balances, and securely storing people’s financial secrets on the device using hardware-backed encryption.

Additional content is presented through an HTML5 web application, which augments our native apps with things like our in-app support center. This is written using Vue and SASS, using modern Javascript, all compiled with Webpack and hot-updateable over the web.

Our backend infrastructure provides a bunch of services that are important (but not crucial) to daily use of the app. Most services have failovers and/or aren’t required in order to participate in the network, so if we ever experience an outage our mobile clients will continue to work. Services are mostly written in Go, and are managed by Kubernetes. Deploys are quick and rollbacks are easy - props go to our DevOps team for this!

And finally, you are looking at our website, which is also written in Vue. It is mostly a marketing tool, but we’re looking to build more functionality that can fill gaps we see in the blockchain-information space.
