Principal Software Engineer, Cloud Applications (AI-Native Development)

Position Overview

We are looking for an experienced Principal Software Engineer to join Autodesk Water Infrastructure.

We are building the next-generation AI-powered cloud platform to power water planning, simulation, and management products used globally. This role offers the opportunity to work on complex, high-scale systems while contributing to products with real-world environmental impact.

We are seeking engineers who combine strong cloud-native expertise with a modern approach to software development, including the effective use of AI-assisted coding tools and AI integration patterns such as MCP. You will play an important role in shaping how AI is embedded into engineering workflows and platform capabilities.

You will join a collaborative, international team with a strong engineering culture, focused on ownership, continuous improvement, and pragmatic delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement scalable backend services using serverless and container-based architectures on AWS.
  • Build and evolve core platform capabilities, including compute-heavy workloads and distributed data systems.
  • Write high-quality, maintainable, and well-tested production code.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor) to accelerate development, support debugging, and improve code quality.
  • Design and develop integrations with AI systems, including building and maintaining MCP servers to enable structured interaction between applications and LLMs.
  • Contribute to integrating AI tooling into team workflows and engineering practices.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (product, design, engineering) to deliver robust solutions.
  • Support and mentor other engineers, contributing to a strong engineering culture.
  • Participate in Agile processes, including estimation, planning, and iterative delivery.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5–8+ years of professional experience in backend or full-stack software engineering.
  • Strong experience building cloud-based applications on AWS (e.g., Lambda, API Gateway, ECS, Step Functions, SQS, EventBridge, DynamoDB, S3).
  • Strong proficiency in TypeScript and Node.js.
  • Experience with Docker and containerized applications.
  • Experience with modern frontend frameworks (React preferred).
  • Hands-on experience using AI-assisted coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot or similar) in day-to-day development workflows.
  • Hands-on experience developing or working with MCP servers, or similar frameworks for enabling structured communication between applications and large language models.
  • Solid understanding of software engineering fundamentals (TDD, CI/CD, DevOps).
  • Experience working in Agile development environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with event-driven architectures and messaging systems.
  • Knowledge of NoSQL data modeling.
  • Familiarity with distributed systems and scalability challenges.
  • Experience designing AI-enabled systems or developer platforms.
  • Interest in improving developer productivity and adopting new engineering tools and practices.

Why Join Us

  • Work on globally impactful products in the water and environmental domain.
  • Be part of a modern engineering culture adopting AI-native development practices.
  • Opportunity to work on cutting-edge integrations between cloud platforms and AI systems (including MCP-based architectures).
  • Collaborate with experienced engineers across multiple countries.
  • Competitive compensation.
  • Flexible working model.
  • Strong focus on learning and development, including access to training platforms and dedicated learning budgets.
  • Opportunity to grow into broader technical leadership roles.
