About Anthropic

Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.

About the role

The IT Engineering team builds, secures, and maintains the systems and infrastructure that enable every team at Anthropic to do their best work. We're seeking an experienced engineer with deep expertise across IT domains—from endpoint management and identity systems to cloud infrastructure, networking, and SaaS security—who can help design, build, and maintain the tools and processes that enable and empower Anthropic employees.

In this role, you'll work closely with Security, IT Operations, and Engineering to implement zero-trust architectures and defense-in-depth strategies that both enable the business and meet Anthropic's ambitious security objectives. You'll combine hands-on technical implementation with strategic planning and design, lead technical initiatives across multiple workstreams, mentor other engineers, and spearhead projects that enable Anthropic to scale even faster without compromising on security.

You'll apply your experience to help mature foundational IT systems while pioneering innovative solutions unique to the challenges of a leading AI company. Your work will directly shape how we scale to AI Safety Level 4 and beyond.

This role offers significant opportunities to define the future of IT. You'll build systems impacting every employee's daily experience while contributing directly to Anthropic's mission to develop safe, transformative AI.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement secure IT infrastructure that scales with rapid growth
  • Build automation frameworks that eliminate manual processes and enable self-service
  • Lead technical initiatives spanning multiple teams and systems
  • Implement robust security controls that maintain user productivity
  • Drive architectural decisions through technical analysis and stakeholder input
  • Establish engineering best practices and drive adoption across the team
  • Create sustainable solutions for vulnerability management and compliance
  • Mentor team members and continuously expand your own expertise
  • Champion Infrastructure as Code and modern DevOps practices
  • Constantly seek new ways to amplify and automate IT with Claude

You may be a good fit if you

  • Have 8+ years building secure IT systems in complex environments
  • Excel at solving ambiguous problems with multiple stakeholders
  • Make evidence-based technical decisions while considering diverse perspectives
  • Communicate technical concepts clearly to any audience
  • View IT Engineering as requiring product engineering rigor
  • Successfully deliver complex projects from conception to production
  • Balance strong technical opinions with pragmatic solutions
  • Thrive when given ownership of challenging technical problems
  • Write clear documentation as a natural part of your workflow
  • Actively seek and incorporate feedback

Strong candidates may also

  • Have led initiatives requiring coordination across multiple teams
  • Transformed traditional IT operations into engineering-driven organizations
  • Built strong partnerships with Security and Engineering teams
  • Excel at translating between technical and business requirements
  • Practice modern development methods (code reviews, testing, CI/CD)
  • Have experience building consensus around technical standards
  • Demonstrate both mentoring others and learning from peers
  • Work effectively in distributed teams

Technical Skills

  • Python programming and/or advanced scripting experience
  • Terraform and Infrastructure as Code
  • AWS or GCP cloud platforms
  • Identity protocols (SAML, OAuth, SCIM)
  • Heterogeneous environment management (MacOS, ChromeOS, Linux)
  • Enterprise SaaS administration and security
  • Identity and access management
  • CI/CD pipeline design

Education requirements: We require at least a Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience.

Location-based hybrid policy:
Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices.

Visa sponsorship: We do sponsor visas! However, we aren't able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate. But if we make you an offer, we will make every reasonable effort to get you a visa, and we retain an immigration lawyer to help with this.

We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification. Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed. Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work. We think AI systems like the ones we're building have enormous social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team.

How we're different

We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills.

The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.

Anthropic, PBC is an American artificial intelligence (AI) safety and research company headquartered in San Francisco, California. Founded in 2021 by a group of former senior members from OpenAI, including siblings Dario Amodei (CEO) and Daniela Amodei (President), the company was established with a primary focus on the responsible development of AI. The founders departed from OpenAI due to differing views on the company's direction, particularly concerning safety and commercialization. Anthropic is structured as a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC), a legal framework that obligates the company to balance the financial interests of its stockholders with its stated public benefit: 'the responsible development and maintenance of advanced AI for the long-term benefit of humanity.' This commitment is further solidified by a unique governance structure involving a 'Long-Term Benefit Trust,' designed to ensure the company's mission remains aligned with public interest as AI technology advances.

The core of Anthropic's work revolves around building reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. The company's flagship product is a family of large language models (LLMs) named Claude, which are direct competitors to systems like OpenAI's GPT series and Google's Gemini. Anthropic has pioneered a technique known as 'Constitutional AI' to train its models. This approach involves providing the AI with a set of principles or a 'constitution' to guide its responses, aiming to make the models helpful, harmless, and honest without relying on extensive human feedback for every undesirable output. The company conducts and publishes extensive research on AI safety, interpretability, and societal impacts, aiming to treat safety as a systematic science. Through its products and research, Anthropic seeks to lead a 'race to the top on safety' within the AI industry, demonstrating that prioritizing ethical considerations and responsible development can be a viable and successful business model in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence.
